In Pozo Estrecho, cultural influences range from historic architecture to music, theatre and patron saint festivals. When planning your trip, it is worth considering the different time periods: some traditions have historical roots, while specific event dates should be checked before you travel.

Location and Getting There

Pozo Estrecho lies in flat terrain at elevations of between 45 and 60 metres. The Rambla del Albujón forms its northern boundary; the municipal boundary with Torre Pacheco also runs there. From Cartagena, you can reach the town via a local road through La Palma. From Murcia, it is connected via the N-301. It is advisable to check road conditions for the day of your journey.

Architecture with Distinctive Features

Villa Carmen, also known as Torre Valeriola, was built around 1906 near Pozo Estrecho railway station. The main entrance features a canopy with Art Nouveau ironwork. Torre Nueva offers a different architectural landmark: the manor house and chapel were designed in 1904 by master builder Pedro Bernabé. The main building features classicist elements; the portico has lobed arches, while the church has Islamic-inspired features. By comparison, Villa Carmen is distinguished by the Art Nouveau ironwork at its entrance, while Torre Nueva showcases varied forms in its manor house, portico and church.

Festivals, Music and Theatre

Pozo Estrecho’s patron saint festivals have been celebrated around 16 January since 1699. Festivities include sampling the traditional Pelotas Galileas; the exact dates and programme vary from year to year. Visitors from different parts of the Region of Murcia attended the celebration of the Pelotas Galileas on 17 January 2026. The parish of San Fulgencio was also founded in January 1699. These historical connections make January part of the local festival and cultural calendar, although the programme is not the same every year.

The musical tradition took on a permanent institutional form in 1893 with the founding of the Sociedad Artístico Musical Santa Cecilia. Pozo Estrecho’s theatre tradition dates back to the 18th century. The Auto de los Reyes Magos, also locally known as Los Pastores, is traditionally performed; the tradition continues to this day. If you are planning a trip to see it, check the current performance dates.

Another musical event takes place in May: the Banda Santa Cecilia performs selected pasodobles at the “Villa de Pozo Estrecho” composition competition, held at the same time as the Fiestas del Campo, Vino, Música y Flores. The band also takes part in Cartagena’s Semana Santa every year, when it is invited by various brotherhood groups. The Certamen de Teatro is associated with the months of February, March and April. Check the current programme before planning a trip around it. A January visit therefore has a different focus from a trip in May: the former centres on festival traditions and Pelotas Galileas, while the latter focuses on music and pasodobles.
