Los Nietos offers a town beach, Playa Los Nietos El Arenal, and a marina, Puerto deportivo de Los Nietos, each with a different focus. The area also has a history of Iberian finds, evidenced both by archaeological discoveries and museum exhibits. You can therefore consider beach activities, facilities at the marina, and local history as distinct aspects when planning your trip.
Beach and Harbor
Playa Los Nietos El Arenal is a town beach. In the beach area of Los Nietos, there are bus and FEVE stops in the associated residential developments. Since stop information can change, it is advisable to check locally. Pedal boats can be rented at the beach; there are also diving opportunities and a diving school. Availability may vary seasonally. If any of these activities is important to your plans, it is best to check in advance rather than assume it will be available year-round.
The Puerto deportivo de Los Nietos marina has toilets, showers, parking, a slipway, and a restaurant. It is also advisable to check these facilities are currently available, since individual services may change. This lets you consider seasonal beach activities and the marina’s listed facilities as separate aspects of your plans.
Iberian History
The Necrópolis Ibérica de los Nietos is the only Iberian settlement and necropolis found on the coast of the Region of Murcia. Excavations of the necropolis associated with the settlement uncovered more than 200 cremation graves. The settlement’s first phase dates to the end of the 5th century BC; it remained in use until the beginning of the 2nd century BC. Los Nietos Viejos II is also part of the Iberian heritage: it is an open-air sanctuary dating to between the 4th and 2nd centuries BC.
The Museo Arqueológico Municipal de Cartagena – Enrique Escudero de Castro displays a double-bodied vessel from the settlement of Los Nietos, dating to the 4th century BC. The museum also exhibits Iberian and Greek pottery from the settlement of Los Nietos on the Mar Menor in Cartagena, likewise dating to the 4th century BC. These finds add concrete examples of vessels and pottery to the settlement’s historical context.
Maritime Tradition and Getting There
Los Nietos traditionally holds a maritime procession for the Feast of the Assumption of Mary. In 2025, the procession route ran through the streets of Los Nietos to the Club Náutico, where the maritime procession began. If you would like to plan your stay around the festival, check the specific dates for that year’s celebration. The municipal project “Los Nietos en la memoria” planned a documentary about the history of Los Nietos and its connection to fishing.
For the Cartagena–Los Nietos route, Renfe offers tickets for one person for a single journey. They are valid on the day of purchase and must be bought at the departure station before boarding. Check service details before your trip. The stops in the beach area and the ticket conditions are practical details to consider when planning how to get there.
