The French Way of the Camino de Santiago runs through Lintzoain; from there, signposted circular hiking trails head towards Egietako Gain, Erro and Esnoz. The Church of San Saturnino, the Otsogalla Dolmen and Alto de El Fuerte bring different cultural and historical topics into your travel plans. If you are considering the village as a possible place to stay overnight, you can first choose between a pilgrimage stage, a circular hike and an archaeological focus.

Camino de Santiago and Hiking Trails

The Roncesvalles–Zubiri stage of the French Way of the Camino de Santiago is 21.65 km long, has an elevation gain of 318 m and is of moderate difficulty. These figures describe the stage as a whole; Lintzoain lies along its route. Distance and elevation figures may change slightly as maps are updated.

After Lintzoain, the Camino de Santiago passes through a wooded area, goes by the remains of the former Venta del Puerto and then continues steadily downhill. Travellers encounter the former inn here as a historic ruin, not as a place to stop for refreshments. This section is also part of route planning: trail conditions may change, so check them before setting out.

The signposted circular hiking trails from Lintzoain head towards Egietako Gain, Erro and Esnoz. These options differ from the 21.65 km Camino de Santiago stage: here, the focus is on circular routes in three named directions. Check the signage and trail conditions on site before setting out on a circular hike.

Church and Archaeological Traces

The Church of San Saturnino was built in the 13th century and remodelled in the 16th century. Its architecture combines the austere simplicity of the Romanesque style with Gothic elements; the church also has an original square tower. The construction and remodelling represent two clearly distinct periods, while the Romanesque and Gothic features reveal different architectural influences.

The Otsogalla Dolmen is located in Lintzoain. An earthen mound and several chamber stones remain; the structure is partly covered by vegetation and in poor condition. A closer look helps you notice the archaeological remains that are still present.

Alto de El Fuerte is a visible archaeological and military feature: a trench encircles its highest point. Its strategic location led to the Alto being used during the Carlist Wars. The dolmen and the fortification thus represent different historical traces. A description published in 2012 mentions a 6 km archaeological route that starts in Lintzoain and visits both the Otsogalla Dolmen and Alto de El Fuerte. As this route description dates from 2012, check trail conditions before setting out.

Landscape and Regional Context

The communal mountain areas of Lintzoain are included in the Erro-Roncesvalles Mycological Park. The main roads and trails in the park are signposted. The forests within the park belong to the Natura 2000 network and the Monte Alduide Special Area of Conservation.

The Erro Valley also offers a regional landscape for comparison: its northern half has numerous beech forests due to high rainfall. In the south, Scots pine forests predominate in sub-Mediterranean habitats. This places the local trails and historic sites within a broader natural area whose forest landscape varies between the northern and southern halves.

Considering Lintzoain as a Place to Stay

Lintzoain lies on the N-135 between Pamplona and Roncesvalles. To decide whether the village is a good base for your travel plans, you can match its location to your planned focus: a Camino de Santiago stage, signposted circular hikes or an archaeological route. The types of routes and historical themes offer different experiences. Consider which one you would like to shape your stay rather than trying to fit every trail and site into a single itinerary.
