In Eulate, trails through forest and pasture landscapes meet a rich architectural history. When planning, you can choose from routes with different itineraries: one circular route is described with its distance, elevation gain and duration, while others follow old paths or lead to viewpoints. The annual festivals also add their own distinctive touches.
Landscapes and Trails Around Eulate
Urbasa-AndĂa Natural Park combines beech forests with open pastures where livestock graze. It was designated a natural park for the richness and good state of conservation of its habitats, its animal and plant life, and its distinctive landscape. The Sierra de LĂłquiz also extends into the municipality of Eulate. It is designated as Special Area of Conservation ES2200022 and includes parts of the municipality.
The AmĂ©scoa Alta Trail SL-NA 282 begins in Eulate beside the Lavadero de Gonea washhouse. Following old roads and paths along the southern slope of Urbasa-AndĂa Natural Park, it connects Larraona, Aranarache and Eulate. The LĂłquiz-Urbasa-Eulate Trail SL-NA 280, by contrast, is described as a circular route: it begins in Eulate and leads south to the lower area of the Sierra de LĂłquiz and north to the Sierra de Urbasa. Along the way are pastures, oak groves and beech forests; from the high points of Alto de Isusura and Alto de Koparazio, the view stretches across the Valle de AmĂ©scoa Alta.
For a specific time and fitness framework when planning, consider the Eulate-Lokiz circular route: it is 5.9 kilometres long, has an elevation gain of 168 metres and is listed as taking 1.5 hours. The route begins at the Lavadero de Gonea and ends at Eulate’s lower washhouse. This gives you several options: the stated duration and distance of Eulate-Lokiz, several connected villages on the SL-NA 282, or the landscapes and viewpoints of the SL-NA 280. Check trail conditions locally.
Monte Limitaciones is a communal mountain in the southwest of Urbasa-AndĂa Natural Park. Eulate is one of the villages of AmĂ©scoa Alta with ownership and usage rights. The mountain can be visited on foot or by bicycle along cycle-friendly paths; motor vehicles may only be used by authorised vehicles. As the park authorities may update access rules, it is advisable to check the current regulations. The Valle de las AmĂ©scoas information point has panels about places of interest on Monte Limitaciones and in the AmĂ©scoa valleys. Also check opening periods before travelling.
Architectural History in the Town Centre
Several houses dating from the 16th century can be seen in the town centre. The parish church of San MartĂn has an exterior façade featuring a finely worked stone structure, with a polygonal apse and associated prismatic buttresses dating from the 16th century. It was moved to its present location, rebuilt there and consecrated in 1780. The Ermita de San Juan Bautista chapel is a 13th-century building in the Proto-Gothic style. As the original parish church, it served this function alongside the church of San MartĂn de Tours; it was last mentioned as a parish church in 1711, after which it was designated a chapel.
At the eastern entrance to the village, beside the road, stands the Humilladero, known as “El Calvario”: a Flamboyant Gothic building from the early 16th century. The Palacio de Eulate is a 16th-century Renaissance palace; its ruins were excavated and consolidated in 2010. A walk through the village therefore offers a chance to see a range of periods and architectural styles, from medieval chapel architecture to the Renaissance.
