Garísoain combines a long history of churches and art with a circular walk that includes a well-preserved section of Roman road. The route starts and ends in the village, while the Iglesia de la Natividad brings together different architectural periods and several works of art. This gives you a choice of different focal points: local history, sacred art and an outdoor excursion.

Churches and Works of Art

The original Iglesia de la Natividad de Garísoain was built in the 12th century; the present building dates back to alterations made in the 16th century. An accidental fire in that century left only the nave walls, the portal and the apse of the old church. The main altarpiece depicts the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. The church’s five altarpieces are considered Bernabé Imberto’s finest work. Imberto also created the Retablo de San Ciriaco in the parish church of Garísoain, which was made between 1600 and 1620.

The Ermita de la Virgen del Pilar also has its own building history: the present hermitage dates from the 18th century and was remodelled in 1939. The image of the Virgen del Pilar is made of marble and stands on a wooden base. These cultural points of interest therefore differ: the Iglesia de la Natividad centres on its architectural periods and altarpieces, while the hermitage is notable for its building history and the material of the image.

Guided tours of the Iglesia de la Natividad are available year-round by prior arrangement. Arrange your visit in advance.

Circular Route with a Section of Roman Road

The “El Hechizo de la Calzada Romana” route is a 7.3-kilometre circular walk that starts and ends in Garísoain. On the Alto de Guirguillano, the route includes a well-preserved 400-metre section of Roman road. It also passes the washhouse and the spring at Sorginiturri. The archaeological section is therefore one part of the route, not its only named point of interest. As trail conditions can change, check them before setting out.

Surroundings and Getting Oriented

The Peñas de San Quiriaco are a notable feature of Garísoain’s natural surroundings. The Ermita de la Virgen del Pilar is about 15 minutes from Garísoain, in the direction of the Alloz Reservoir and beyond a gorge. This information adds a distinct local landmark to the details about the buildings and route; the time given is approximate.

To decide whether Garísoain is right for your stay, you can weigh up the different interests: the parish church offers several architectural periods and named altarpieces; the circular walk combines a set route with a preserved section of Roman road. The hermitage offers another cultural highlight, while the Peñas de San Quiriaco connect you with the natural surroundings. You can shape your stay around church art, a circular walk or the landscape.
