Pozuelo de Alarcón brings together different reasons to visit: an extensive forest park with a named trail, viewpoints and cultural venues, as well as festivals held on fixed or customary dates. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to focus on a route through green spaces, a view over the city or a visit centred on local culture.
Parks, Trails and Viewpoints
Parque Forestal Adolfo Suárez is in Pozuelo de Alarcón (Madrid), in the expansion area of Casa de Campo, and covers 150 hectares. The Senda de la Antequina, a 2.5-kilometre trail, runs through the park. If you would like to include a named trail in your plans, its stated length gives you a concrete point of reference.
The viewpoints offer a different focus. El Torreón serves as a viewpoint over Pozuelo de Alarcón. Another viewpoint in Parque Cerro de los Perdigones offers views of the Sierra and the city of Madrid. The viewing terrace there can be reached on foot via two paths facing each other. The park is also home to Teatro del Bosque, an open-air auditorium integrated into the grounds. This makes it possible to combine a viewpoint with a very different cultural venue in the same park, without implying a specific visitor route.
The facilities in the other green spaces also vary: Parque Prados de Torrejón has a public fountain, a petanque court, a children's play area and a dining area. Parque Isaac Albéniz has two modern children's areas, a cycle path and a lake. If you choose to visit one of these facilities, it is a good idea to check what is currently available beforehand, as it may change.
Monuments and Cultural Venues
Cruz de la Atalaya is considered the oldest monument in Pozuelo de Alarcón. It is located in Parque Forestal Cruz de la Atalaya, right at the start of Camino Viejo. Its historical significance extends beyond its connection to the town today: Cruz once marked approximately the midpoint between Pozuelo and Húmera, when they were still independent municipalities. Manteo del Pelele also has a specific history of revival. In the early 1990s, the Asociación Cultural La Poza revived this tradition.
For exhibitions, Centro Cultural MIRA has a large hall and three adjoining rooms that can be used to develop exhibitions. Teatro MIRA is a separate venue with 565 seats and eight wheelchair spaces. If you are planning cultural activities, these are two different types of spaces: on the one hand, areas for exhibitions; on the other, a theatre with designated seats and wheelchair spaces.
Festivals and Local Specialities
The festival in honour of Saint Sebastian is celebrated in Pozuelo every year on 20 January. On the Sunday after 20 January, the festival includes a mass and a procession with the traditional Tamboreada. During this festive period, “caridades” are also made: sweet bread rings with anise and aguardiente. If you are planning a visit around this tradition, the festival date is a useful point of reference; the mass and procession take place on the Sunday after 20 January.
Another way to discover local food culture is through the gastronomic event “Pozuelo de Tapas”. It takes place every year in two editions, usually in April and November; however, the months are not fixed. During the week-long event, guests can sample the tapas offered by restaurants and vote for their favourite. If you would like to plan your trip around one of the editions, check the specific event dates.
The two occasions offer different guidance for choosing when to travel: the festival in honour of Saint Sebastian is tied to 20 January and the following Sunday, while “Pozuelo de Tapas” has two annual editions, usually scheduled for spring and autumn. For a stay not tied to a festival, the parks, viewpoints and cultural venues offer different ways to spend your time, which you can choose according to your interests.
