Mejorada del Campo has two clearly distinct sides: the protected landscape along the Henares and an architectural history featuring a parish church, a chapel and the Catedral de Justo. The natural setting is especially tangible at the lagoons and along the circular route near Las Islillas. The cultural sites, meanwhile, differ in when they were built, their dedications and their construction methods.
Landscape and circular route
Part of the municipality of Mejorada del Campo lies within the Parque Regional del Sureste. The Lagunas de la Presa del río Henares in Mejorada del Campo are also part of this protected area. The park therefore covers only part of the municipality; the lagoons give this landscape a specific local focus.
The Las Islillas nature area features wetlands and white poplar forests. The “Paseo por las lagunas y la presa del río Henares” circular route starts and ends at the Las Islillas recreational area. It is 2.80 kilometres long, has a low difficulty rating and includes a bird observatory overlooking the lagoons of the dam on the Henares.
The route length and difficulty rating offer different points of reference when choosing a walk for your stay. Trail conditions can change, so check them before setting out. When planning your day, take both the 2.80-kilometre distance and the low difficulty rating into account if you have other plans.
Churches and architectural history
The parish church of Mejorada del Campo was built between the 16th and 17th centuries. The Chapel of San Fausto has a special purpose: it was established to house the saint’s relics in a cenotaph made of polychrome Italian marble. Their construction dates, dedications and materials give each of these religious sites its own historical significance.
The Catedral de Justo is a unique building in Mejorada del Campo. A single man built it over several decades using recycled materials, despite having no architectural training. In connection with the Catedral, on 12 October 1961 Justo Gallego began building a chapel dedicated to the Virgen del Pilar on former agricultural land in Mejorada del Campo. This date adds a clearly documented milestone in local architectural history to the much earlier construction period of the parish church.
Tourist information last updated on 11 February 2026 reported that the Catedral de Justo was temporarily closed until its municipal permit had been fully processed. Check current access arrangements before visiting.
