Becerril de la Sierra is located in the Sierra de Guadarrama. There are routes to suit different preferences: a short, easy circular route, moderate trails through woodland and vegetation, and challenging climbs to mountain peaks. In the town, the Paseo Urbano offers a special focus on architectural heritage.
Hiking Trails from Circular Walk to Summit
The Ruta de la RomerĂa is a short, easy circular route to Raso de los Enebros, and can also be cycled. Along the way, it crosses the Zalailla and Angostura streams. Their banks are lined with vegetation, and the streams provide habitat for amphibians such as frogs and toads. There are tables and benches at Raso where you can rest. As facilities may change, check their condition before visiting.
The Ruta de los Almorchones is rated moderate. It runs around Cerro de Las Cabezas, Almorchón de Abajo, Almorchón de Arriba, Collado de Majespino and Peña Retuerta. Oak woodland and Mediterranean vegetation accompany the route, along with views of the Navacerrada Reservoir. There is a recreational area near the Presa del Baño. This hike combines woodland and landscape scenery with several named geographical features.
The Ruta de Becerril al Telégrafo passes over the 1,331-metre-high Cabeza Mediana on its way to the Torre del Telégrafo. Shaded pine forest and panoramic views of the Sierra de Guadarrama define this trail. The Torre del Telégrafo was part of the Madrid–Irún telegraph line, which opened in 1846. Unlike this route, the destination of the Ruta desde Becerril a la Maliciosa is the 2,227-metre summit of La Maliciosa: the climb is challenging, making it a different choice from the short circular walk at Raso.
The Ruta desde Becerril al Alto del Hilo leads to the 1,267-metre summit of Alto del Hilo. From the top, the 360-degree panorama stretches across Becerril de la Sierra and Navacerrada. Within the municipality, the route also connects with the Madrid section of the Camino de Santiago. This gives you a choice of three clearly distinct summit destinations—Telégrafo, Maliciosa and Alto del Hilo—each with its own stated elevation and, in the case of Alto del Hilo, a described all-round view.
Townscape and Cultural Heritage
The Paseo Urbano por Becerril de la Sierra is a heritage walk through the town that takes in six particularly representative architectural landmarks. An information board stands at each one. The walk draws attention to individual buildings; in the original town centre, small squares also recall the former layout of the settlement as a livestock-rearing village. The surviving traditional rural houses include single-storey buildings with masonry walls and roofs of Arabic tiles on wooden structures.
A small museum opened at the end of 2012. It displays photographs, household and everyday objects, and tools from the past two centuries. The museum is not permanently open to the public; a virtual video visit is available. If you are considering an in-person visit, check current access arrangements beforehand.
Events and Other Experiences
La Noche en Vela takes place every year on the second Saturday in July. Its cultural programme includes music, dance, cinema, poetry, crafts and books; individual events may vary from one edition to the next. Checking the current programme before your trip will help you find out the date and what events are on offer.
The Embalse secreto de Majalespino is also highlighted as a natural attraction. Another option is a guided visit to the Gabarrera brewery, which includes a tasting of three craft-brewed beers. As booking details may change, check the information in advance. Paragliding and hang-gliding activities are also offered in Becerril de la Sierra; before making plans, check with the relevant providers about availability and conditions.
