Alpedrete lies in the Hoyo de Villalba valley, on the slopes of the Sierra de Guadarrama. Its granite landscape, centuries-old dehesa and local history offer several distinct focuses for a stay. When planning, it is worth distinguishing short walks through the landscape from longer themed routes through the streets and opportunities to learn about the local stonecutting tradition.
Granite Landscapes and Trails
La Dehesa is a centuries-old landscape of meadows, pastureland, streams and wetlands. It is also notable for its ecological importance: it is one of the areas with the greatest diversity of amphibians in the Community of Madrid. Visitors interested in how this landscape came about can find explanations along the El Legado Cantero trail about the granite landscape on the foothills of the Sierra de Guadarrama and the ecological restoration of more than twenty abandoned quarries.
El Legado Cantero is an easy circular trail through the Monte de Utilidad PĂșblica No. 27 âDehesa Boyalâ in the municipality. It is 1.6 kilometres long and takes about an hour to walk. Its low difficulty level and coloured directional arrows help with navigation. Check local conditions before setting out. A signposted trail also passes through restored, disused quarries, where visitors can find information on foot about ecological values and the local stonecutting tradition.
The Ruta de las Farolas offers a different perspective on the town. This self-guided route runs through the streets of Alpedrete and is available in Spanish and English. It is about 13 kilometres long, with 25 information panels; the start and finish are at the central Plaza de la Villa. Three additional points of interest are Castillo de Mataespesa, Ermita de la Lanchuela and Nuestra Señora del Carmen in the Los Negrales district. Check the signage and access to the additional points on site. The Sierra de Guadarramaâs digital route collection also lists âALPEDRETE. Subida al Cerro del Cañalâ and âALPEDRETE. Entre canteras y dehesasâ. Before setting out, check whether the current map view is available.
Stonecutting Traditions and Cultural Heritage
At the Museo Cantero, a permanent exhibition is devoted to the tools used by Alpedreteâs stonecutters over time, as well as photographs and documents on the local quarrying tradition. QR codes beside the exhibits provide access to an audio guide about the history and use of the tools. Check the latest visitor information before your visit.
The Iglesia de la AsunciĂłn de Nuestra Señora also brings together several periods: its structure is dated to the 15th century based on its construction, whereas an earlier date in the 12th or 13th century was traditionally given. The church is considered one of the most distinctive fortified churches in the diocese. Inside is a 16th-century MudĂ©jar coffered ceiling with eight octagonal panels. Ermita de Santa Quiteria is a small stone religious building near the schools and sports centre; it houses the image of the townâs patron saint.
Cattle Routes, Festivities and Getting There
The Ărea de InterpretaciĂłn de las VĂas Pecuarias de Alpedrete is located beside the Cañada Real Coruñesa, which runs through the municipality. There, the network of livestock routes is shown as a ground map. This makes it possible to consider the wider route network as a subject in its own right, alongside local walks and hikes.
Alpedreteâs Fiestas Patronales are held in honour of Santa Quiteria. The 2026 festivities programme included a traditional RomerĂa, the transfer of the saint between Ermita de Santa Quiteria and the parish church, and a procession. Alpedrete has a passenger railway station operated by Adif. Check the latest information with Adif or Renfe before travelling.
