Villaobispo de Otero offers a range of ways to explore the area on a trip: in Sopeña de Carneros, the Tuerto River and a riverside bathing area are close at hand, while chapels, mills and historic buildings shape the character of other places. There is also a circular route that passes through several municipalities on foot or by bicycle. You can tailor your visit to your interests, balancing waterside scenery, local history and outdoor activity.

Waterside scenery and bathing history in Sopeña de Carneros

Playa fluvial de Sopeña de Carneros lies in the heart of the village, beside a wide, meadow-covered stretch of the Tuerto River that has been dammed. The Argañoso stream joins the river nearby, and poplars and willows provide shade. The riverside bathing area continues the region's bathing tradition. If you are planning a day of swimming, check the seasonal conditions and facilities in advance, as both may change.

An iron bridge crosses the Tuerto River at Sopeña de Carneros. It was inaugurated on November 3, 1919. At the edge of the village, towards La Carrera, are the remains of the La Forti bathhouse, which operated until 1934. The bathing area, bridge and bathhouse thus represent different chapters in local history, from a continuing bathing tradition to a former bathing establishment.

Chapels, church and cultural heritage

The chapel in Otero de Escarpizo, popularly known as the Chapel of Pernía, houses a 16th-century Mannerist altarpiece, paintings and two grave slabs. In Brimeda, the Church of San Esteban stands out for its very large bell and coffered portico. The two buildings have distinct architectural features: the altarpiece and grave slabs in one, the bell and portico in the other.

The Torreón de Pernía is a former heraldic palace dating from the 16th century, founded by Antonio Álvarez Escarpizo. Following its restoration, it became the cultural and ethnographic centre of La Cepeda. The remains of a historic hillfort lie in the vicinity of Carneros; on its eastern side, a natural wall drops down towards the railway line.

Hillforts, mills and traces of past uses

Above Presarrey, the ancient hillfort is described as a viewpoint overlooking the Argañoso, Porcos and Tuerto rivers. Presarrey lies just below the weathered hillfort and is characterised by native ash trees. The village was once a popular bathing spot—a historical association distinct from the present-day riverside bathing area in Sopeña.

Near Villaobispo de Otero are the remains of the Batanes de la Encorralada, in densely vegetated terrain. The date 1803 can be seen on one surviving opening. The mills also offer a glimpse into local history: between the Moldera Real and the railway footbridge farther down, there are eight grain mills, some with an attached residential section. Their location and varied building layouts make them a chapter of their own alongside the chapels and historic buildings.

Circular route on foot or by bicycle

If you are planning a longer outing, you can follow the circular route “Por el corazón de La Cepeda” on foot or by bicycle. It starts and ends in Otero de Escarpizo, is about 20 kilometres long and passes through the municipalities of Villaobispo de Otero, Magaz de Cepeda and Villamejil. The approximate distance gives an indication of the route's length, but not of how long it will take to walk or cycle. Check the route conditions locally before setting off.

Traditions and paths in Carneros

At Christmas, searching for the Three Wise Men by torchlight is a tradition in Villaobispo de Otero. The straw torches are known as “paizos” or “mechizos”, and the direction changes each year. In Carneros, a path lined with walled orchards also leads to Fuente del Pueblo. Services are held twice a year in the Santo Tirso chapel; check the dates in advance if you plan to attend.
