San Emiliano offers a variety of reasons to visit: architectural heritage, a fixed annual event and mountain landscapes with opportunities for hiking. Start planning by deciding whether to focus on the cultural heritage, the horse show in August or a seasonal hike at higher elevations. These priorities give your trip a different focus and can also help you choose when to travel.

Cultural Heritage and Tradition

San Emiliano has elegant manor houses, including the House of Don Pío. In Riolago de Babia, which belongs to the municipality of San Emiliano, the square and its surroundings are designated an Asset of Cultural Interest in the “Historic Ensemble” category. The designation dates from 1995. This brings together two aspects of architectural heritage: individual representative houses and a protected ensemble comprising the square and its surroundings.

Another cultural highlight is the Hispano-Breton Horse Competition and Exhibition. It takes place in San Emiliano on the last Sunday in August. If the event is the main reason for your trip, check the date in advance and factor it into your travel plans.

The Casa del Parque de Babia y Luna is housed in the former residence of the Palacio de Quiñones, a 16th-century cultural monument. Its exhibition, “Los Secretos de Babia y Luna,” presents the distinctive features of the park’s different areas. Cultural exploration here encompasses both the history of a historic building and an insight into the park’s diverse areas.

Mountain Landscapes, Lake and Trails

The Babia y Luna Natural Park is a representative landscape of the ecosystems of the Cantabrian Mountains. One distinctive natural feature is Lago Chao, south of Riolago de Babia: it lies in a glacial cirque enclosed by the rocks of Penouta and the summit of La Ferrera. The lake is listed in the Regional Catalogue of Wetlands of Special Interest under code LE-03. The park represents the mountain ecosystem landscape, while Lago Chao draws attention to a particular cirque and its striking boundaries.

Puerto de Ventana reaches an elevation of 1,587 metres and offers views of the San Emiliano Valley and the Ubiña Massif. Its snow-covered heights also provide a setting for winter hiking. Here, scenic views and exploring the landscape on foot come with a seasonal consideration: winter hikes are specifically associated with the snow-covered heights.

The long Las Naves–El Panazal hiking trail passes through the pastures of Puerto de Pinos and the Arroyo del Puerto valley. Plan transport back for this hike so you do not have to walk the entire route in reverse. Factor this in when planning your day if you include the hike in your trip.

Plan Your Travel Dates and Accommodation

The activities mentioned offer different points of reference for planning your trip: the horse show takes place on the last Sunday in August, while winter hikes at Puerto de Ventana depend on the snow-covered heights. First decide which priority matters more to you, then choose your travel dates accordingly. If you are looking for a hotel in San Emiliano, you can use that activity as a starting point for planning your stay. For the Las Naves–El Panazal hike, arranging transport back is an additional practical step.
