Calle del Agua is part of the Ruta Jacobea, and the old town of Villafranca del Bierzo is designated as an Asset of Cultural Interest (Bien de Interés Cultural). The Camino de Santiago and culture shape the town: these include Romanesque architecture, a distinctive pilgrim tradition and local May customs. Wine tastings and walks offer further opportunities within the municipality.

The Camino de Santiago and architectural history

The Iglesia de Santiago is a Romanesque church dating from the 12th century. The Puerta del Perdón is located there. Pilgrims who could not continue to Santiago de Compostela because of illness received an indulgence there. Calle del Agua and the church portal show two specific aspects of the Ruta Jacobea: a street that forms part of the route, and a pilgrim tradition subject to a particular condition.

The Castillo de los Marqueses de Villafranca was rebuilt in 1515 as the residence of the Marquessate of Villafranca del Bierzo. The Monasterio de la Anunciada houses a collection of Flemish paintings from 1601, known as Los ermitaños de la Anunciada. The site of today's Colegiata de Santa María was previously occupied by a monastery of the French Cluniac Order. 1070 is cited as a possible year of construction.

Campo del Agua is also a cultural monument: the village lies within the municipality and is protected as an Asset of Cultural Interest (Bien de Interés Cultural) in the category of an ethnographic ensemble. Thus, alongside Villafranca's architectural history, the municipality's cultural heritage is another theme to explore during a stay.

May traditions and music

During the Festa do Maio, the Maios parade through the streets and squares of Villafranca del Bierzo, accompanied by traditional songs. Donations are requested, and a ritual in which the Maio is raised is performed. For the human Maio, a child or young person is dressed in Cañaveira to represent the spirit of spring on that day. In Castilla y León, this custom is considered unique both for its form and for the language used in the songs; eastern Bierzo Galician is sung.

Music is also part of the local events calendar: in 2025, the Playa Fluvial on the Burbia River was the venue for the 20th edition of the Festival Internacional de Músicas del Mundo, known as Fiestizaje.

Wine and landscape

Wine tastings are available at local wineries in Villafranca del Bierzo and its municipality. These include white, red and rosé wines from DO Bierzo. If a tasting fits your plans, it's best to check availability directly with the winery concerned.

The municipality of Villafranca del Bierzo covers 177 km² and is part of the Reserva de la Biosfera de Ancares Leoneses. Within the municipality, you can walk through vineyards and chestnut groves, take trails in the biosphere reserve and head for scenic peaks. La Leitosa offers a different view of history: the gold mines bring the Roman past to life. Wine, walking country and archaeology offer distinct themes alongside the history of the churches and the Ruta Jacobea.

Getting there and planning

Villafranca del Bierzo can be reached by car via the AP-6, A-6 and N-VI. For groups, the Oficina de Turismo offers guided heritage tours from Tuesday to Saturday. They last approximately two hours and require advance booking. Check the details before your trip.

When planning your stay, you can choose what to focus on according to your interests: pilgrim history and architecture offer a different theme from wine tastings or walks in the municipality. If you'd like to include several of these, check tasting availability with the winery and book the guided tour for your group in advance.
