Villablino is the main town in the Valle de Laciana. Mountain peaks over 2,000 metres, protected habitats and traces of mining history shape the region. Wildlife watching, cultural history and routes suited to different kinds of activity offer a range of ways to enjoy your stay.

Landscape and Wildlife in the Valle de Laciana

The Valle de Laciana Biosphere Reserve encompasses the municipality of Villablino and 14 villages. The protected valley and the ZEPA Special Protection Area for Birds provide habitats for the Cantabrian capercaillie, brown bears, roe deer and wild boar. The River Sil runs through the valley, forming gorges and narrow passages in places. A network of viewpoints in the Valle de Laciana offers the chance to observe brown bears in their natural habitat, given enough patience. Birch, oak and rowan trees grow in the mixed forest of Rabanal de Arriba; the forest remains one of the last refuges for the Cantabrian capercaillie in this mountain landscape.

The “La Tierra del Oso” Trail Running Center, supported by the Biosphere Reserve, offers walking and running routes of different lengths and elevation profiles, with consideration for the protection of endangered species. Winter sports are also among the options: the Valle de Laciana-Leitariegos area offers skiing, snowboarding and a range of routes adapted to different users. It currently has 8 kilometres of ski runs and a snow park.

Routes and Excursions with Different Highlights

The Cueto Nidio Route is a 15-kilometre circular hike starting and ending in Rabanal de Arriba (Villablino). The 12-kilometre Vía Verde de Laciana connects valley scenery with archaeological remains of mining. The Camino Natural a Villaseca is fully accessible by bicycle and follows the former railway line between Villablino and Villaseca de Laciana. These named routes therefore differ both in length and in what they highlight: a circular hike, valley views with traces of mining, or a former railway line.

At Laciana Natura in Villablino, you can rent e-bikes or book a guided route accompanied by instructors. Confirm the booking details before your trip. The Aula Geológica de Robles also has a specific visitor requirement: opening hours vary, and visits should be arranged in advance. The collection includes fossils, particularly from the Carboniferous period, as well as minerals.

Cultural History and Local Insights

The Casona Sierra Pambley is a manor house built by the Sierra Pambley family in 1774. At the end of the 19th century, Francisco Fernández Blanco de Sierra Pambley founded the Sierra Pambley Mercantile and Agricultural School in Villablino and built a building for it next to his birthplace. The Iglesia de San Miguel in Villablino is a notable example of rural Romanesque architecture. In Laciana, La Zamora is one of three pre-Roman hill forts open to visitors. The Castro de La Muela in Rioscuro dates back to the Second Iron Age and represents Asturian settlement history, with livestock raising and subsistence farming.

The Centro del Urogallo in Caboalles de Arriba, near Villablino, presents the geology, palaeontology and habitats of Alto Sil—from high-mountain landscapes to valley floors. The natural and cultural landscape of Alto Sil also includes its forests, the Cantabrian capercaillie and the brown bear, as well as the traditional summer use of high pastures by the Brañeros.

Festivals and Traditional Desserts

La Feriona is a traditional annual livestock fair in Villablino. Exhibits include cows, horses, mastiff dogs and chickens; there are also numerous market stalls. The fair is associated with the tradition of eating octopus on 12 October. Check the programme details before your trip.

In August, the Fiesta de la Manteiga in Sosas combines regional festivities with a visit to La Popular, a historic hydraulic dairy that is now used as a museum, and demonstrations of traditional butter-making. Here too, check the dates before your trip. Traditional desserts from the Laciana mountain region include fisuelos, pionono or brazo de gitano, and borrachines.
