Toral de los Vados can be explored through a range of very different themes: railway culture, leisure activities on the Río Burbia and products from the Bierzo. This lets you tailor your trip to your interests, whether that means exhibitions and a repurposed railway carriage, riverside activities, seasonal traditions or local cuisine.

Railway History in Many Forms

The Centro de Interpretación del Ferrocarril displays models and other railway-related materials, as well as photographs and stories. A train simulator rounds out the exhibition. Objects, images, stories and simulation offer different ways to explore the subject of railways.

Another aspect is the Bibliovagón, a renovated railway carriage with a selection of books. It previously served as a cafeteria for passengers on the Estrella train between Barcelona and Galicia. Comparing its former use on the train with its current form as a Bibliovagón illustrates how the carriage’s function has changed.

By the Río Burbia: Leisure, Pools and a Riverside Walk

Playa Fluvial de Toral de los Vados is a leisure area on the banks of the Río Burbia. Its facilities include large lawns and a picnic area with stone tables and benches. In summer, there are also free outdoor saltwater pools: a pool for adults, a children’s pool with a central island and slide, and a splash park for children. As these pools are seasonal, check the opening arrangements before your trip.

The Paseo fluvial offers another way to spend time by the river. The 1.5 km riverside path has rest benches, picnic areas and an outdoor fitness trail. While the pools and lawns are the main features of the Playa, the Paseo combines a waterside walk with opportunities for exercise and breaks. Its stated length gives you a specific idea of the distance.

Waterfall Route and Summer Swimming

Salto del Pelgo is on the Bierzo waterfall route and is a destination for a refreshing swim in summer. If you would like to swim there, check local conditions beforehand. This adds a nature-focused option to the railway and riverside activities, without implying that it is the same as the facilities at the Playa.

Products of the Bierzo

Toral de los Vados is part of the Bierzo growing and production area for wine, botillo and paprika. Other products highlighted include cherries, Reinette apples and Conference pears, along with other horticultural and fruit-growing products. The selection therefore ranges from wine and hearty botillo to local fruit. It gives your trip a culinary connection to Bierzo agriculture; it does not imply specific tastings or markets.

Traditions and Events

Magosto is an autumn tradition featuring a fire, roasted chestnuts and wine. It takes place mainly in the first half of November. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the current programme.

Le Toralé Clasiqué is a cycling event with a nostalgic focus and a vintage atmosphere. Toral de los Vados also hosts a festival of regional tourist interest. It includes exhibitions, street games, a communal meal, train rides, musical performances and theatrical performances. If you are planning your trip around these events, check the dates and the programme for each one.

Getting There by Train

Some regional passenger trains currently stop at Toral de los Vados station. If you are travelling by train, check the timetable before your trip, as services may change. The station is also a good starting point if you are interested in the town’s railway history.
