Trabadelo brings together the French Way of St. James and tangible traces of its cultural history. For pilgrims, the climb to Cebreiro begins here; at the same time, the parish church of San Nicolás preserves a Baroque altarpiece and a small medieval carved figure. Traditional hórreos add rural architecture to the picture. Those interested in the town can explore it from different angles: through the pilgrimage route, religious art and the history of the village.

The Way of St. James and the Landscape

Because of its proximity to Galicia, Trabadelo is part of the French Way of St. James. The route through the town crosses areas of great scenic beauty. The climb to Cebreiro also begins in Trabadelo for pilgrims. These details make the town easy to understand both as part of a larger pilgrimage route and as a specific point of reference along the way.

The landscape and route provide different clues to the character of the trail: the description of the paths emphasizes their scenic beauty, while the climb to Cebreiro offers pilgrims a clear point of reference. Those interested in the Way of St. James can therefore see Trabadelo not just as a name on the route, but also understand it through these two aspects.

Church Art and Traditional Architecture

Two works from different periods can be discovered in the parish church of San Nicolás. The Baroque altarpiece was created by López de Sisto; the church also preserves a small medieval carved figure of the Virgin and Child. Together, the works show different forms of religious art: the Baroque design of the altarpiece on the one hand, and the medieval depiction of Mary and the Child on the other.

The chapel of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción also has its own furnishings, including an altar and an ara. In contrast to the parish church, characterized by its altarpiece and carved figure, these two furnishings are the focus in the chapel. This makes it possible to explore different religious buildings and details in Trabadelo without reducing them to a single work of art or period.

A number of traditional hórreos can be seen in the town. This rural architecture complements the religious buildings with another aspect of the townscape. Those interested in architectural forms can therefore appreciate sacred buildings and traditional architecture as distinct, tangible impressions of Trabadelo.

Historical Traces Along the Pilgrimage Route

The development of the village is also connected with the Way of St. James. Trabadelo was repopulated through the establishment of a settlement under Diego Gelmírez, the first archbishop of Compostela. The village also had a long-standing historical connection with the Church of Santiago in Galicia: from 895, when Alfonso II gave Trabadelo away, until the middle of the 19th century, the village belonged to this church. Together, these details provide a timeframe for the town’s institutional history that extends far beyond a single stop along the route.

Another historical account links Cerro de Aldares with Autares. The medieval castle of the lord of Autares may have been located there. At this crossing, as at other crossings, pilgrims were charged a toll. The castle’s possible location remains a cautious historical interpretation; the toll belongs to the traditional account associated with the crossing.
