Several specific points of reference are helpful for finding your way around Sopeña de Carneros: the iron bridge over the Tuerto, the route to the hillfort and the surviving buildings of the former La Forti spa. There is also a river beach, a special water-rights system and a local tradition. Together, these bring the riverside landscape and the town’s history into focus in different ways. When planning your visit, you can focus on the riverbank, historic buildings or both.

Bridge, Presarrey and hillfort

The iron bridge over the Tuerto was inaugurated on 3 November 1919. It is also a landmark for the route described here: after crossing it, a path leads left towards Presarrey and the hillfort. The directions thus identify the river crossing and two destinations where the local landscape can be seen in different ways.

Presarrey is a riverside area among native ash trees, just below the hillfort. The hillfort stood on a rocky ridge shared by Sopeña and Villaobispo. From the rocks at the hillfort, you can almost see the watershed of the three rivers Argañoso, Porcos and Tuerto. A watershed separates areas from which water flows into different rivers. The three names make this connection with the landscape concrete and distinguish it from a view of just one river.

La Forti and local tradition

The remains of the La Forti spa, also known as Fortificante, are on the road towards La Carrera. The spa operated until 1934. What remains is the bathing pavilion, built of exposed brick, and the manor house with a gallery and a pergola covered in vines. The two buildings retain different architectural features: exposed brick on the pavilion, and a gallery and leafy pergola on the manor house.

Peña de Santiago is also part of local storytelling. It is associated locally with six hoofprints, considered genuine and attributed to the horse of Saint James. This attribution is part of local tradition. It offers a different way into the town’s history from the dated bridge or the surviving buildings of La Forti.

Water features and travel planning

The Moldera Real is operated by turning a handwheel to power mills under a special water-rights system. If you are relying on it to be operational, check its condition on site. This distinguishes the mechanism described from the historical water system: the handwheel powers the mills, while the system governs water use.

Sopeña de Carneros has had a river beach since the 2021 bathing season. If swimming is part of your plans, check local conditions in advance. The river beach and the Moldera Real relate to different uses of the water: a swimming area on the one hand and powering mills on the other.

Road connections

The main road connection to Sopeña de Carneros is the LE-451, between Astorga on the N-120 and Riello on the LE-493. The LE-6409 connects the LE-451 in Sopeña de Carneros with the LE-6445. The two routes serve different purposes for finding your way: the LE-451 places the town between Astorga and Riello, while the LE-6409 provides a connection with a junction in Sopeña. Check road conditions for your specific travel date.
