Hiking trails in Sariegos start in several different districts. This gives you a number of local starting points when planning your trip. Springs, views and traces of history each offer their own highlights. If you are looking for accommodation in Sariegos, these themes can help you decide what you would like to focus on during your stay.

Hiking trails with different highlights

The Ruta de las Fuentes is a circular trail that focuses on the many springs. They lie between the two valleys the route crosses. The trail also offers views of the Bernesga Valley and the city of León. The route description therefore combines a specific landscape feature with two named viewpoints.

The Ruta de los Llanos offers a different perspective: it lies within the municipality of Sariegos, in Pobladura del Bernesga, and offers panoramic views of Sariegos, León and the Bernesga Valley. When choosing a route, you can therefore compare different highlights: springs between two valleys on the Ruta de las Fuentes, or a panorama featuring several named places on the Ruta de los Llanos.

In Carbajal de la Legua, the Ruta de los Miradores shares part of its route with the Camino de San Salvador. The section of the Camino de San Salvador that runs through the municipality of Sariegos in Carbajal de la Legua passes through oak and holm oak forests. The trails thus offer several specific points of interest to match your preferences: springs, views, a shared section of trail, or woodland scenery.

Landscape within the municipality and the wider area

Monte San Isidro is also part of the landscape in the wider area around Sariegos. A small northern section of the mountain lies within the municipality. In the wider area, people from León and nearby towns use Monte San Isidro for recreation and nature watching. The distinction matters for understanding the geography: only the northern section lies within the municipality of Sariegos; its use as a recreational area refers to the wider area.

Historic sites and traditions

Traces of history include Roman structures and sites in several named locations. A Roman aqueduct is located within the municipality of Sariegos, in Carbajal de la Legua at Paraje de La Griega. A Roman camp lies about 500 metres from Sariegos, in an area known as El Castillo. It was initially dated to the period from the 1st century BC to the 1st century AD.

Traces from later periods have also been identified: only a few remains survive from the Benedictine monastery of Santa María de Carbajal, which was in operation from the 16th century. La Pontona is a medieval bridge at the entrance to Sariegos. It crosses the Bernesga dam and may once have served residents as a crossing towards León. These examples differ both in period and type: an aqueduct, a camp, monastery remains and a bridge each tell a different story.

La Pontona is visible near the CL-623, opposite the entrance to the Pasarela de Sariegos. However, a description from March 2021 says that it is difficult to reach and unusable due to its condition. If you would like to include the bridge in your plans, check the access and its condition locally.

Alongside these historic structures, the Mayos tradition is part of springtime in Sariegos. The tradition is observed as an established, recurring spring custom. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the specific dates in advance.

Travel planning

The León–Lorenzana–Cuadros regional bus route serves Sariegos. It is worth checking the timetable for your travel date when planning your trip. This lets you combine your journey with the sights that interest you most, without assuming a fixed order for visiting the trails and historic sites.
