Santa Colomba De Somoza can be explored through two specific questions: What role did the coach trade play, and how do cultural history and landscape meet along the local routes? Figures from 1561 and 1752 give the first topic a clear profile. In 1561, 32 people lived in the village; six coachmen used 34 mules or horses. In 1752, there were 34 residents, including 17 coachmen with more than 105 mules. The population figures are close, while the number of coachmen differs considerably. The animal figures are also categorised differently: the earlier record lists mules or horses, while the later one lists mules. Together, these two snapshots provide a concrete insight into the historical role of the coach trade.

Coachmen’s History and Cultural Sites

In Santa Colomba De Somoza, visitors can learn about the design and development of traditional coachmen’s houses. The Archivo Gráfico de la Era Pop offers another way to explore cultural history. It is housed in the renovated Casa de las Maestras building and is located right beside the Camino de Santiago. The centre comprises a documentation centre, several exhibition rooms and a multipurpose hall for concerts, presentations, conferences and film screenings. This brings different cultural formats together in one place, from exhibitions to events.

Architecture and Historical Traces

The Torreón de los Osorio is the only surviving 14th-century secular monument in the Maragatería. Its square floor plan, height of 22 metres, four storeys and dungeon describe the structure from several angles. The parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción in Rabanal del Camino dates from a different period: it was built in the late 12th century in the Romanesque style. The comparison spans a 14th-century secular monument and a Romanesque church from the late 12th century.

The landscape, too, preserves traces of different eras. A Roman villa was discovered at Pago del Soldán, an area shared with Turienzo near Laguna Cernea. The hills north of Santa Colomba De Somoza feature pits and washing areas from historic mining. The El Carballal del Oro cultural route tells the story of Roman gold mining and its lasting impact on the landscape in the municipality of Santa Colomba De Somoza. The route includes the Mirador de Laguna Cernea, one of its three viewpoints.

Laguna Cernea and Routes on the Camino de Santiago

For a walk with a clearly stated distance, take the circular route to the Mirador Laguna Cernea: it begins north of the village centre and is two kilometres long in total. The viewpoint is beside a large artificial lagoon that is almost 2,000 years old. This offers two distinct ways to experience the landscape: El Carballal del Oro tells the story of gold mining, while the distance given for the circular route describes the length of a specific trail.

The connections to the Camino de Santiago can also be understood in terms of place and time. According to the Codex Calixtinus, Rabanal del Camino is both the end and the starting point of a stage of the Camino de Santiago. At the entrance to Foncebadón, the present-day Camino arrives from the direction of Rabanal. The historic Camino de la Recua is a different route: it was a shortcut from the Turienzo valley towards Puerto de Foncebadón. These place references describe different aspects of the route network, from the present-day Camino to a historic link.

A Taste of the Maragatería

Cocido maragato offers a culinary glimpse of the region. The dish consists of nine types of meat, chickpeas with cabbage and noodle soup. These components are served in this order, followed by pudding and Roscón. The prescribed sequence is as much a part of the dish’s description as its ingredients, adding a regional speciality to the cultural and landscape themes.
