Church and early local history
The historically outstanding building in Ribaseca is the church dedicated to the Apostle James. Ribaseca appears as early as 905 under the historical form “Ripa Sicca”. The historical record goes back further: in 1017, Fredenando and Domna María, who lived in “Ripasica”, donated their property to the Monastery of Santiago de León. The Santiago Church was once the mother church of the church in Santovenia. The parish church is also known by the name “Parroquia del Apóstol Santiago”. Its former role as a mother church explicitly links Ribaseca’s ecclesiastical history with Santovenia.
The Pendón of Ribaseca
The Pendón of Ribaseca is another local cultural feature in its own right. Its pole is eight metres long, and the cloth is red and green. In July 2013, the Pendón was raised again in Ribaseca. Alongside the Santiago Church, it offers another perspective on the town’s history: in addition to the church building, there is another tangible symbol associated with Ribaseca.
Landscape and wineries in the surrounding municipality
In the wider municipal area of Santovenia de la Valdoncina, the view opens out over the Valle de la Oncina: the landscape is dotted with wineries, which the municipality recommends as places worth seeing. Watercourses also help orient you in the area. The Arroyo del Valle flows towards Ribaseca and joins the Arroyo de Oncina near Onzonilla. Elsewhere in the municipality, locals call the Arroyo de Oncina “el reguero”; it loses its flow during the summer dry season. The direction of flow of the Arroyo del Valle and the seasonal change in the Arroyo de Oncina are distinct landscape features.
Activities and getting there
Santovenia de la Valdoncina has a municipal sports facility with swimming pools, a tennis court, a football pitch, a beach volleyball court and a cafeteria. One specific cycling option is the “León-Villacedre-Ribaseca-Santovenia de la Valdoncina-León” mountain bike route. It passes through Ribaseca, is 35.44 kilometres long and is rated easy. Check route conditions and availability before setting out. The municipality of Santovenia de la Valdoncina can be reached via the A-66 (Ruta de la Plata) and the N-120 national road; the mountain bike route, in contrast, specifically passes through Ribaseca. This keeps getting to the municipality and choosing a particular cycling route as two separate planning considerations.
