Candín combines walking routes along the Ríu Seco with local history and the architectural heritage of the wider Ancares region. If you are planning a stay, you can consider several questions separately: how is the village laid out, which hiking destinations are named, and which cultural traces would you like to learn more about? Candín is located in the Los Ancares Biosphere Reserve.
Getting your bearings in the village
The settlement is divided into the area of Barracón, located alongside the road, and a higher section. The church of Virgen de las Angustias stands in the higher, older section. It houses an image of the Virgen, the village's patron saint.
Traditional architecture is also part of Candín's distinctive character. It is based mainly on stone and slate.
Hiking and water
Those who follow the Ríu Seco from Candín can reach Alto del Mirandelo and then the Burbia Valley. Parts of the river course dry up in summer; this applies to individual sections, not the entire Ríu Seco.
Fumeixín is a group of mineral springs in Candín. The Cascada de Fumeixín is a waterfall several metres high. The wider Ancares region also offers long hikes and climbs to the high mountains of Miravalles and Cuiña, in a landscape shaped by glaciers. This places a route starting from Candín alongside a broader landscape and hiking context.
Local history and regional architecture
The Ferrería de Tejedo de Ancares is part of the region's history. In August 1788, the councils of Tejedo and Pereda de Ancares granted permission for its construction. At the confluence of the Ríu Seco and Ríu Ancares in Candín, numerous “murocas” attest to gold mining in Roman times.
The architectural forms found in Ancares villages also offer a distinct way to discover the region. Traditional pallozas with thatched roofs and typical Ancares hórreos have been preserved in nearby Balouta. In Pereda de Ancares, a restored palloza retains all its materials and structural features as they were left by its last occupant. The rural museum in Pereda de Ancares shows the interior of an authentic palloza and the transition from the palloza to the Ancares-style house with a slate roof.
In Pereda de Ancares, Artesanía Pumarego handcrafts wood into household items, sculptures and furniture, using traditional tools. The preserved buildings, the different roofing and building materials, and the woodwork offer several concrete perspectives on regional architecture and everyday culture.
