Tubilla del Lago reveals several layers of history: a 16th-century church with a Romanesque tower, a 10th-century castle and a mill with roots in the 17th century. Murals in the streets, a March tradition that is still observed, and links to the wines of Ribera del Duero add to the town’s cultural character.

Church, Castle and Mill

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción is a 16th-century church with a Romanesque tower. The Castillo de Tubilla was built in the 10th century on the rocky heights as a defensive structure for the town. Only limited remains of the castle survive. The two buildings offer distinct historical perspectives: a church and the remains of a fortification-related structure.

The Molino Bajero was established in 1664 in La Vega, on the River GromejĂłn, 200 paces from the town. During its reconstruction, the original structure and mechanisms were preserved. Its history therefore includes not only its founding year but also the preservation of its milling technology.

Murals and a Wine Motif

One tourist attraction is the route of artistic murals, which leads through the streets of Tubilla del Lago. The street art thus forms its own thematic thread alongside the historic buildings. Tubilla del Lago is also home to a metal sculpture made from an oversized bottle and a wine glass. It is a tribute to the wine-growing identity of Ribera del Duero.

Las Marzas and Culinary Tradition

Las Marzas is a tradition that is still observed in Tubilla del Lago. On the night marking the start of March, young men walk through the town singing the verses associated with the tradition. If you would like to plan your trip specifically around this custom, check the dates for the year in question.

The culinary tradition includes grilled suckling-lamb chops. They are cooked over vine-wood embers and served with a traditional village loaf and Ribera del Duero red wines. The links to wine are thus evident both in the cuisine described here and in the metal sculpture.

Lagoons and a Historic Hermitage

Work to restore the Lagunas de Valcabadillo began in 2007. The aim was to increase the biodiversity of the comarca; the lagoons were also intended to provide waterbirds with a refuge and areas for feeding and breeding. Restoration efforts and the lagoons’ intended importance to waterbirds are therefore among the subjects associated with Tubilla del Lago.

A 13th-century hermitage lies two kilometres from Tubilla del Lago. It has a distinctly Cistercian character and is the only surviving building in the settlement of Quintanilla de los Caballeros. Alongside the buildings in the town, it offers another historic landmark with a clearly defined date and location.
