Solarana brings together Late Gothic architecture, Roman traces and a landscape bearing evidence of earlier human activity. When planning your visit, you can focus on different themes: the town’s architectural history, archaeological sites at Fuente Untierma and the Castro, or hiking in the Sierra de Solarana.

Church Architecture and Local History

The Iglesia de la Asunción de Nuestra Señora is a Late Gothic church dating from the late 15th or early 16th century. Its architecture is defined by three naves and rib vaults. In 1992, it was recognised as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC). This gives the historic setting a clearly defined architectural landmark.

The Capilla de los Angulo also tells the story of the town: it was built in 1607 as the funerary chapel of the Angulo family, who lived in the town. To the west of Solarana stands the former Rollo jurisdiccional, dating from the 16th century; the monument is incomplete and has been extensively altered. The streetscape also features stone houses: most houses in Solarana are built of stone.

Roman Traces and the Castro

In Roman times, there was a thermal complex at Fuente Untierma. Traces of a Roman road that ran from Clunia have also been preserved by the spring. Two distinct archaeological themes can be explored here: the use of a thermal spring and a route dating from Roman times.

The Castro of Solarana was a fortified settlement of the Vacceos, which may have had up to 2,000 inhabitants. This possible population figure gives an idea of its scale, but remains explicitly uncertain. The archaeological site thus complements the town’s visible buildings without being limited to a single era.

Museums and Their Themes

The Museo del CĂłmic y del Cine Mudo is dedicated to comics and silent films. It is part of the Museos Vivos network and is housed in a municipal building. Check the access arrangements before your visit so you can plan your stay accordingly.

The Centro de InterpretaciĂłn del Monte y el Castro Celta offers a different focus: its themes include ceramics, remains of the Castro Celta, mining, and flora and fauna. In Solarana, cultural themes such as comics and silent films sit alongside topics relating to the landscape, nature and archaeology.

Annual Festivities

The San Roque celebration takes place on 16 August. In the morning, a procession goes to Fuente Untierma, where chocolate is served. Participants then return dancing to the Eucharistic celebration. The San Isidro Labrador celebration includes a blessing of the fields, accompanied by dulzainas and wine. Check the current festivities programme before travelling.

Hiking in the Sierra de Solarana

The landscape offers another way to discover Solarana. In the Sierra de Solarana, the Encina Grande is associated with preserved remains of old charcoal-burning sites. For hikers, this adds traces of earlier human activity to the natural and landscape perspective. These hiking routes offer a different experience from exploring the architectural history of the church and chapel, while Fuente Untierma and the Castro are the main archaeological sites.
