In Sasamón, you’ll encounter several layers of history: a largely preserved town layout, Gothic religious architecture and traces of the Roman past. Museums, sculptures and historic buildings each offer a different focus. If you’re planning an overnight stay in Sasamón, you can plan your visits around these themes and the stated visiting hours of the church.

Historic Town Centre and Iglesia de Santa María la Real

The historic centre of Sasamón largely preserves its original urban layout, and traces of the former town wall also remain. The town is protected as a cultural asset of special interest in the “Historic Ensemble” category. Historians may still recognize the continuation of the Roman axes Cardo and Decumanus in today’s street layout. This interpretation is not certain.

The Iglesia de Santa María la Real is a protected Gothic monument dating from the 12th and 13th centuries. Its plan follows a Cistercian-abbatial design and comprises five naves. The south portal has a specific architectural connection to Burgos Cathedral: it is a replica of its Sarmental Portal. Tourist visits to the church, sacristy and cloister are possible daily from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Check the hours before you arrive.

The church also houses the Museo Parroquial de Sasamón, with religious works of art. The Centro de Interpretación Medievum is located there as well. Its interactive exhibition traces regional history from the Roman era to the Middle Ages. The focus is the Mosaico de Arquillo, dated to the late 2nd or early 3rd century.

Roman History and Regional Context

The municipal area contains numerous archaeological sites that help explain the final events of the Cantabrian Wars and the Romanization of this area. The remains include a section of a Roman road that linked Astorga with Zaragoza and Tarragona. Sasamón is also one of the four towns on the Cuatro Villas de Amaya route; each of the four towns has an interpretation centre. These connections place the local archaeological sites within a broader regional history.

Art, Sculptures and Religious Buildings

The Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Ángel Miguel de Arce López houses 150 contemporary artworks donated by the clergyman Ángel Miguel de Arce Sasamón. You’ll encounter another form of art at the Casa-Museo de Salaguti: the artist’s work is a large-scale sculpture resembling a building, where his wood carvings and paintings are primarily displayed.

The Cruz del Humilladero is a limestone sculpture more than six metres high, dating from around 1500. It is attributed to the artistic circle of Colonia. El Crucero de Sasamón, also known as Calvario de Sasamón, dates from the 16th century and consists of three stone crosses representing Calvary. The Ermita de San Isidro also tells the story of a longer construction history: it was built in three phases from the early 16th to the 18th century.

Bridges, Water Supply and a Nearby Monument

The Puente de San Miguel has three pointed arches, characteristic of medieval architecture. The bridge may have been built over an existing Roman structure. The Puente de Trisla crosses the Brullés River just a few steps from the historic centre. La Cambija, meanwhile, formed part of Sasamón’s medieval water supply system: the structure aerated the water to improve its quality before it was distributed to the Plaza Mayor.

Near Sasamón, the Arco de San Miguel de Mazarreros is the only surviving remnant of the former Romanesque church of San Miguel de Mazarreros. Its seven flared archivolts rest on decorated capitals. As its condition may change, check before planning a visit.

A Culinary Highlight and Planning Your Stay

The Queso de Oveja Sasamón is part of the local culinary scene. The cheese is made entirely from the milk of Churra and Merina sheep and is aged for three to six months. When looking for hotels in Sasamón, you can first decide whether you want to devote your stay primarily to the church and town centre, Roman history or works of art. The visiting hours of the Iglesia de Santa María la Real are a specific point to factor into your plans.
