Salas De Los Infantes brings together dinosaur finds, church art, caves carved into rock and a sandstone landscape, each offering a different reason to visit. The contrast between the bones in the museum and the dinosaur footprints at Costalomo is particularly striking: the footprints rise from the rock as rounded reliefs. Churches and rock formations add their own architectural and landscape features to these palaeontological themes.

Dinosaur finds and a broad sweep of time

The fossil collection at the Museo de Dinosaurios de Salas de los Infantes is one of the most complete in Spain. The museum displays the bones of a rebbachisaurid dinosaur, as well as a large part of the finds made there. The first exhibition area follows a simple, linear route from the Lower Palaeolithic to the early Middle Ages. This timeframe applies to the first area and extends well beyond the subject of dinosaurs: the dinosaur remains on display and a chronological sequence spanning long periods offer different ways of exploring the past.

Church art between Gothic and Classicism

The Iglesia de Santa María was consecrated in the Gothic style in 1492. Its main altarpiece is a Renaissance work from 1550, attributed to Diego Guillén. The Iglesia de Santa Cecilia has a different architectural character: this Gothic church has three naves, columns, arches and stone star vaults. Its main altarpiece is a Classicist work from 1640, dedicated to Saint Cecilia. Comparing the two churches takes visitors from Gothic architecture to two later styles of decoration: the Renaissance in Santa María and Classicism in Santa Cecilia.

Rock formations and surroundings

Peña Rota is a complex of 13 artificial caves carved into the rock. It is associated with hermit life in the Sierra de la Demanda between the 8th and 11th centuries. A short walk leads from Peña Rota to the natural sandstone bridge, Puente de San Miguel. The bridge offers panoramic views of Salas De Los Infantes and its surroundings. A historically shaped rock complex and a striking natural rock formation are therefore just a short walk apart.

At Costalomo, the dinosaur footprints rise from the rock layer as rounded reliefs rather than sinking into the rock. The Tenadas de Costalomo site was the first place in the province of Burgos where dinosaur footprints were mentioned. The distinctive shape of the tracks and their early mention in the province offer two different perspectives on the subject.

A November event for mushroom enthusiasts

The Jornadas MicolĂłgicas take place in November and have been held since 1984. If you would like to include this event in your travel plans, check the specific dates before your trip. This adds a seasonal dimension to the enduring themes of the museum, church art and landscape.
