Nava de Roa brings together a wine experience, evidence of its winemaking heritage and a route with scenic views. The town’s history also has tangible points of interest: a ruined Baroque hermitage and preserved half-timbered architecture.

A wine experience that requires planning

Bodegas y Viñedos Monteabellón’s “Inmersion en el terroir” experience includes a tour of the vineyard and winery, with six interactive stops. It also includes an aperitif with two wines at the Mirador de La Blanquera. If this is the experience you’re looking for, check dates and booking availability in advance, as both may change. This will help you see whether the experience fits your travel dates.

Wine culture and local history

The Ermita de Santa Ana is located on Monte Calvario. Built in the Baroque style, the hermitage is currently in ruins. Traditional wine cellars remain on the slopes of Monte Calvario, along with the remains of old wine presses. The underground wine cellars of Valreinas are also on Monte Calvario, in the municipality of Nava de Roa. Two themes meet on this hill: religious architecture and traditional winemaking. The remains of the wine presses add another element to the area’s winemaking heritage.

Examples of traditional architecture with half-timbered walls have also been preserved in Nava de Roa. These include buildings that survived the town fire in the 19th century. Comparing them with the hermitage reveals two distinct architectural features of the town’s history: the Baroque style of a religious building and the half-timbered walls of preserved buildings.

Scenery and wildlife watching

The Sendero de Abellón, also known as PRC-BU 166, offers views of Monte Abellón, the valley of the La Pradina stream and the slopes of the Páramo de Corcos. These sights offer a different focus from the architectural heritage: a mountain, a stream valley and the slopes of a páramo. Wildlife watching is another part of the nature experience. Animals you may see along the route include rabbits and common woodland birds such as great tits, crested tits, wood pigeons and coal tits. However, you should not count on spotting any particular species as a fixed part of your itinerary.

Festival dates and finding accommodation

Festival dates may also influence when you travel. The dates listed are 2 September for the festival in honour of San Antolín Mártir and 9 May for the festival in honour of San Gregorio Nacianceno. Before travelling for either date, check the local programme so that your plans fit the schedule.

When looking for a holiday apartment, use your main reason for travelling as your first filter. If the wine experience is your priority, check its date and booking availability well in advance. If you’re more interested in local history or scenery, use those themes to guide your search. This way, you can find accommodation that suits your interests without assuming you’ll follow a fixed daily schedule.
