Quintanar de la Sierra brings together historic buildings, archaeological sites and an annual pilgrimage. Its cultural highlights range from traditional houses and a parish church to a necropolis and a Mozarabic hermitage. This offers a range of possibilities for planning a visit: local history, architectural details, the layout of an archaeological site or a festival in May.

Townscape and history

Traditional Pinariego-style houses can be recognised by their distinctive doorways and conical chimneys. These features give the local architecture its character. The parish church of San Cristóbal offers a different perspective: it was built in 1630 on the remains of an old Visigothic temple. The building brings together a specific construction date and an older religious history. Quintanar was also an important centre of the Real Cabaña de Carreteros. This historical role adds the town’s significance in the history of the Real Cabaña to the story of its houses and church.

Cuyacabras: necropolis and archaeological site

The archaeological site of Cuyacabras includes a ceremonial area with a pagan tradition, a settlement and a necropolis. The necropolis contains 166 graves and 16 niches carved into the rock. These figures refer to this part of the site; the archaeological complex covers a wider area. During your visit, you can therefore see the necropolis, settlement and ceremonial area as parts of the same archaeological site. From Quintanar de la Sierra, you can reach the necropolis via forest tracks; follow the signs.

Cueva Andrés and the landscape

Cueva Andrés is a 10th-century Mozarabic hermitage located in a forest clearing. A cross is carved inside the arch opening. Another detail is the horseshoe arch carved in relief in an area that probably served as an oratory or altar. Compared with Cuyacabras, Cueva Andrés draws more attention to a single building and its architectural details. A separate point of interest in the landscape is the source of the Arlanza, Fuente Sanza, which lies in the pine forests close to Quintanar de la Sierra.

Pilgrimage to Nuestra Señora de Revenga

The pilgrimage to Nuestra Señora de Revenga takes place on the last weekend of May. If you are travelling for the event, check the annual programme before your trip to confirm the exact date. The pilgrimage begins at midday with a ritual greeting of the crosses and banners from the participating towns. It takes place on communal land jointly owned by Canicosa de la Sierra, Quintanar de la Sierra and Regumiel de la Sierra. The three towns take turns preparing and organising the events. Unlike the buildings and archaeological sites, the pilgrimage is tied to a specific date, so it is a suitable reason to plan a trip around its schedule.
