When choosing a destination, Covarrubias’ protected townscape, art collections and named routes offer different points of interest. The historic town centre is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural; arcades and half-timbered houses give it a character typical of Castile. Historic buildings, recurring festivals and routes with clearly distinct features round out the picture.

Architecture and getting your bearings in the historic town centre

Casa de Doña Sancha is considered one of the finest examples of this traditional Castilian architecture in Covarrubias. It provides a tangible reference point for the arcades and half-timbered houses that define the character of the historic town centre. The entrance to the Archivo del Adelantamiento de Castilla is known as the Puerta Real and is considered the main entrance to Villa Covarrubias. One of Covarrubias’ two 16th-century cross monuments stands in front of the Archivo. Together, these named buildings and features offer different perspectives on the town’s history: from house types to entrances and historic monuments.

Works of art, churches and local history

The polychrome Tríptico de los Reyes Magos by Gil de Siloé, dating from the late 15th century, is on display at the Museo-Colegiata. The Museo de la Colegiata also houses painted panels associated with Berruguete and Van Eyck. The Iglesia de Santo Tomás features a Renaissance pulpit and altarpieces. The artistic highlights range from a named work with a date and artist to panels with art-historical associations and Renaissance furnishings in a church.

The Torreón de Fernán González dates back to the 10th century. Its exhibition on siege weapons includes scale-model machines and large-scale models described as fully functional. Exhibition details may change; check the latest information before your visit.

The Museo Antigua Botica preserves a former pharmacy that operated as a pharmacy from 1746 to 1975. Its owners maintain it and organise guided tours. The Museo Antigua Botica is a private home.

Routes with different focuses

The Camino de San Olav is a 60-kilometre cultural, sporting and religious route from Burgos Cathedral to Covarrubias; it passes through the town. Ruta 4 – El Cerro / San Olav takes a different approach: it passes through holm oak and juniper stands to the San Olav Chapel. From there, a downhill path continues towards Covarrubias. The Camino focuses on the longer route and its context, while Ruta 4 offers specific points of interest in its vegetation, chapel and descent. Check trail conditions before setting out. COVARUTAS routes are offered within the Parque Natural de Sabinares del Arlanza.

The chapel itself is also a distinct cultural and historical landmark: San Olav is considered the first hermitage built in Spain in the 21st century. This lets you plan your route around the combination of trail, landscape and building you prefer, without conflating the different routes.

Festivals to plan your visit around

The PasiĂłn Viviente takes place every year on the evening of Good Friday. Residents of Covarrubias make the costumes themselves and portray the Stations of the Cross. The Fiesta de la Matanza has been held every year since 1989 on the Saturday after the feast of Saint Anthony on 17 January. Pork products are presented and sampled, and the traditional slaughtering process is also demonstrated. During the festival, various bars host a weekend fair featuring pork pinchos and tapas, along with wine bearing the Arlanza designation of origin.

The Fiesta de la Cereza y de la Cuna de Castilla has been held since 1989 on the second weekend of July. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these festivals, check the specific event dates.
