A route with a river, views, and rock art
The PRG-68 “A Vía Escondida” route starts in Viascón and passes river bathing spots and a recreation area near Cabanelas. It reaches the Portela da Laxe petroglyph site and continues to the Coto do Ramalloso viewpoint. The river, views, and rock art offer different highlights along the same route.
The Lérez and Cabanelas
The Lérez, which the route follows near Viascón, is part of the Natura 2000 network. The Cabanelas river bathing area has access to the bathing area, accessible access, and a recreation area with children’s play equipment. These facilities offer a different focus from the viewpoint or petroglyph site: here, the emphasis is on access to the river and a recreation area. Water conditions can vary seasonally; check them in advance if time by the river is important to your plans.
Petroglyphs and granite
Portela da Laxe and Laxe das Coutadas are two distinct sites associated with rock art. The PRG-68 route reaches the Portela da Laxe petroglyph site. Laxe das Coutadas is a group of engravings on a domed outcrop of medium-grained granite, measuring 12.60 metres long and 3.40 metres wide. The engravings show concentric circles and zoomorphic, or animal-shaped, motifs, including deer.
Igrexa de Santiago de Viascón
The Igrexa de Santiago de Viascón complements the rock art with a building that has its own architectural history. It was built in 1892, with a Latin-cross floor plan and a vaulted chapel. The year dates the building, while the floor plan and chapel describe its architectural form. Coming from the N-541 towards Ourense, turn off three kilometres after Tenorio and continue for another 200 metres to the church. Check the turn-off locally if you use these directions to plan your journey.
Access to Laxe das Rodas do Lombo da Costa
From the N-541, access to Laxe das Rodas do Lombo da Costa follows a steep forest track for 400 metres. It may be uneven or seasonally wet. Take these conditions into account when planning your visit. The two access routes differ: the church directions include the turn-off via Tenorio, while the rock art site is reached by a steep forest track from the N-541.
Festival dates throughout the year
The festival calendar lists the Festa de Santiago Apóstol in Viascón on 25 July and the Festa da Virxe de Lourdes on the fourth weekend of August. 25 July is a specific calendar date, while the fourth weekend of August is a time period. If you want to plan your travel dates around either festival, check that year’s programme before booking.
