Vilagarcía appeals to a range of interests, with its archaeological and ecclesiastical history, Ría landscape, market and festivals. When planning your trip, it helps to decide whether you would prefer to focus on historic sites, outdoor trails, or local produce and events.
Architectural History, Archaeology and Churches
The Pazo de Rubiáns was built in the 15th century over a fortified tower dating from the 12th century and extensively remodelled in the 18th century. The pazo also has a winery and a shop selling wines and camellia-based cosmetics. Castro de Alobre adds another historical dimension: this archaeological site is among the most important castros in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula. A historic route through Vilagarcía passes along streets and squares with archaeological remains and historic buildings.
The Igrexa de Santa Eulalia de Arealonga is a Baroque church built at the end of the 17th century on the site of a hermitage of unknown origins. Its architecture shows clear influences of the art of Santiago de Compostela. The main nave has the layout of a Latin cross. Its two side chapels, San Miguel and Rosario, each have their own distinctive features: San Miguel is known for its sculptural ensemble, while Rosario is notable for its monumentality. These details can help you appreciate both the church's overall layout and its individual chapels.
The Igrexa de San Martín de Sobrán is considered one of the finest examples of Romanesque art in Galicia and Spain. It lies on the Route of the Arousa Sea and the Ulla River. MUFEVI is also associated with this route. This small, two-storey museum is devoted to railway history in its permanent exhibition, which presents images, documents, objects and interactive games. A 3D projection room complements the exhibition. The cultural highlights thus include architectural styles and archaeology as well as the history of the railway.
The Ría, Trails and Water
The Vía Verde de O Salnés starts in Abelle, on the outskirts of Vilagarcía, and offers views of the Ría. Allow about two and a half hours for the route. The terrain is almost flat, and pedestrians and cyclists share the trail.
On Isla de Cortegada, a visitor route passes a former fishing village and a chapel, and goes through laurel, oak and eucalyptus forests. Organised visits depart mainly from Vilagarcía and Carril and are accompanied by a guide accredited by the national park. Visits are possible every day of the year; permits from the national park are required for navigation and anchoring. As providers and visitor arrangements may change, check the national park's latest information before planning your visit.
O Campanario-Bamio is a quiet beach with a river character at the mouth of the Ulla River. Kitesurfing takes place there, and one of Galicia's main centres for the sport is located at the adjoining campsite. The area's nature and outdoor activities offer several options: the shared Vía Verde, a guided visit to the island, and kitesurfing at the beach.
Market and Events
The Plaza de Abastos is a building dating from 1929. It sells fish, seafood, Galician meat, artisan sausages, bread, cheese, honey and artisan preserves. Cooking demonstrations and promotional events are held regularly. Some products bought there can be prepared for you to taste on site on the upper floor. The market offers a different way to experience Vilagarcía from its historic buildings and trails, focusing on regional food and how it is prepared.
The Fiesta del Agua takes place every year on 16 August; if you are planning a specific trip, check the latest event dates. The Combate Naval is a fireworks festival on the beach that recreates the 1866 attack on the port of Callao in Peru. These events are another factor to consider when choosing when to travel, alongside the year-round visits to Isla de Cortegada.
Consider which of these themes you want to shape your stay, and plan your visits accordingly.
