Cambados brings together architectural heritage and local traditions: the Fefiñáns district features a striking ensemble of buildings around a square, alongside historic landmarks, museums, route connections and the Fiesta del Albariño. Fefiñáns: Square and Renaissance Architecture
In the historic Fefiñáns district, a monumental square forms the centrepiece. It is bordered by the Pazo de Fefiñáns, an arched bridge, the Torre del Homenaje and the Church of San Benito. The pazo is a Renaissance-style building. This makes it possible to appreciate Renaissance architecture as part of the larger square ensemble, rather than viewing just one building in isolation. The different buildings bordering the square give the district a distinct architectural focal point. Cambados was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural in November 2001. This designation adds an overarching heritage dimension to the individual architectural features.
Ruins, Historic Functions and Museums
The ruins of Santa Mariña de Dozo combine original Romanesque, maritime Gothic and Renaissance elements. The remains were declared a National Monument in 1943. These three stylistic influences offer a different perspective on architectural history from the Renaissance pazo in Fefiñáns: here, several architectural traditions come together in the ruins. The Torre de San Sadurniño also tells the story of a historic function. It served as a lighthouse and helped friendly ships reach the port safely. So alongside architecture, the focus is also on navigation.
The Casa Museo Ramón Cabanillas displays personal belongings, photographs, a reconstructed study and first editions of his works. The collection brings together everyday objects, the writer’s workplace and his published books, shifting the focus from the building to the writer and his work. The Molino de Mareas de A Seca museum offers a technical perspective, explaining what historic tide mills are and how they work. As the tide ebbed, the mill used stored high tide water to power its four millstones. This detail makes the mechanism easy to understand: the stored water, released as the tide ebbed, powered the millstones. Visits to the Museo Etnográfico e do Viño are by appointment. Two Distinct Route Connections
Cambados is part of the maritime and riverine Ruta Traslatio, also known as the Ruta Xacobea del Mar de Arousa y Río Ulla. It commemorates the arrival by boat of the mortal remains of the Apostle James. The 190-kilometre coastal Ruta del Padre Sarmiento also passes through the coastal region, with Cambados among its key waypoints. The routes represent different themes: the Traslatio combines maritime and river connections with the tradition of St James, while the Ruta del Padre Sarmiento highlights its coastal route and overall length.
Albariño, Cooking Workshop and Scallops
The Fiesta del Albariño has been held annually in Cambados since 1953. The festival includes public wine tastings at A Calzada. If you want to plan your stay around the Fiesta, check the event dates in advance. That way, you can plan around the actual festival dates rather than assuming the tastings are available year-round.
A hands-on cooking workshop also offers a practical introduction to local produce: participants prepare recipes using these products under the guidance and supervision of a professional cook. The offer may change, so check current availability in advance. Collecting scallops is also permitted in Cambados, and there is a festival dedicated to this local speciality.
