Pilgrim Routes and Churches in Santiso

The Igrexa de San Román de Santiso is listed on both the Camino de Invierno and the Vía de la Plata. This connects two named pilgrim routes with the same church. For travellers interested in the Camino de Santiago routes, it offers a tangible way to explore Santiso’s religious and cultural history. The church’s presence on both routes makes it a clear starting point if you want to connect pilgrim-route themes with local religious architecture.

A different route history is associated with the church in Eirexe: it stands on the former Camiño Real, also known as the Camiño dos Casteláns. Pilgrims, merchants and carters once used this route. Its varied users provide a broader picture than a purely religious interpretation: trade and transport were also part of its former use. This makes it possible to understand the route’s history in terms beyond its significance to pilgrims.

Landscape and Buildings

From the Igrexa de San Román de Santiso, the view extends to the mountains of the Serra do Candán, Testeiro and Monte Carrio. The valleys of Deza, Trasdeza and Ulla stretch out in front of the church. These mountain ranges and valleys are two specific features of the landscape. They give Santiso’s landscape a sense of place and offer a different focus from its pilgrim routes and churches.

The Pazo de Velón in Santiso do Fondo is a large manor house with an attached chapel dedicated to Saint Blaise. The combination of manor house and chapel makes the building a specific cultural point of interest: the chapel adds a religious element to the building, with its dedication providing a clear connection. If you are interested in historic architectural forms, the building type and the chapel’s dedication offer two distinct points of interest.

The Capela de San Brais is a small religious building associated with the adjoining Casa de Velón. Its modest size and the stated connection draw attention to a different dimension of religious buildings. For travellers who would also like to learn about smaller religious buildings on their cultural trip, both its scale and its connection to the Casa de Velón are of interest.

The Castro and Local Festivals

Few structures are visible on the surface of the Castro de Santiso. Small rises in the terrain seem to mark the course of the site’s northern section. Its estimated diameter is approximately 100 metres. These clues provide different points of reference: the rises suggest a possible course, while the approximate measurement gives an idea of the site’s size. Visibility, possible layout and overall scale can therefore be considered as separate aspects of the castro.

A local cultural article from 2024 reported that flowers were still strewn and First Communion celebrated for the Feast of the Virxe de Fátima on 13 May. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the dates and programme in advance. In 2024, it was also reported that the municipality had made an attempt to revive the celebration in honour of San Román alongside the Santo Domingo festival. Before travelling, check whether and when the celebration is taking place.
