During a stay in Monte Bouza, you can plan around different interests: monastery and settlement architecture, views of the Ría de Pontevedra, coastal paths or a visit to Tambo Island. Each destination has its own focus. So if you are looking for a holiday apartment, it may help to consider whether culture, scenery or a particular excursion will be the deciding factor for your trip.
Monastery and maritime townscape
The Monastery of San Xoán de Poio was declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1971. Its complex includes two cloisters, one of the country’s most important monastic libraries, with more than 100,000 volumes, and a monumental granary. The cloisters, collection of books and granary each offer a different cultural and historical perspective, giving you several aspects of the monastery to consider when planning your trip.
Combarro preserves a traditional maritime settlement built of granite, whose townscape includes around 60 hórreos. Here, the settlement’s layout, with its recurring hórreos, takes center stage, while the monastery is defined by its cloisters, library and granary. If you are interested in architecture, you can therefore consider two distinct focal points: the monastery complex and the granite settlement.
Views and paths through the landscape
The Mirador de Samieira offers views of the Ría de Pontevedra and Tambo Island. It is a clear viewpoint for taking in two named landscape features. A visit to the island itself is separate: it has its own access requirements, which you should plan for in advance.
The A Pindilleira waterfall, which is almost seven metres high, is located along the Fervenzas do Pereiro hiking trail. The Samieira watermills route belongs to the Senderos Azules network, established by the Asociación de Educación Ambiental e do Consumidor (ADEAC). The waterfall and watermills route offer different focal points: one is a named natural feature, while the other is a route with an explicitly stated network affiliation.
A coastal route in Samieira passes small coves and areas of oak woodland. These add coastal stretches and oak woodland as further specific features to consider when making your choice. A community route description uploaded in August 2024 runs from Monte Bouza to Praia de Covelo. Along this route, Igrexa Santa Maria de Samieira is 2.6 kilometres from the starting point. This waypoint refers specifically to that route.
Visiting Tambo Island
To visit Tambo Island, you need an access permit and a ticket for an organised boat trip departing from Combarro. If Tambo is part of your stay, plan for both requirements and check the visitor information in advance. This keeps the island visit as a separately planned activity alongside the viewpoint and walking routes. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can weigh up the destinations mentioned according to which cultural and landscape attractions matter to your trip.
