Mountain ranges rising above 1,000 metres in the east and a western area averaging 600 to 700 metres give Rodeiro varied landscapes. There are also Romanesque buildings, an archaeological site with the remains of a Roman villa, and a museum housing a selection of materials recovered there. For travellers who want to balance landscapes and cultural heritage when choosing a destination, Rodeiro offers several distinct themes to explore.

Landscapes between Serra do Faro and the rĂo Arnego

The eastern part of Rodeiro is home to the Serra do Faro and its neighbouring mountain ranges, which rise above 1,000 metres. The western part comprises the upper reaches of the rĂo Arnego, or the Camba valley, where the average elevation is between 600 and 700 metres. The figures refer to different measures: elevations above 1,000 metres are given for the east, while an average is given for the west. Monte Faro offers another landmark. It is the highest peak in central Galicia, and from its summit you can see parts of all four provinces.

Romanesque churches and Pazo de Trasulfe

The Church of Rodeiro is a 12th-century Romanesque building, considered an example of ornamental purity. The Church of Camba also dates from the 12th century, but was built as a patrimonial chapel for the lords of Casa de Camba. The two churches belong to the same Romanesque period, but their documented associations differ: the ornamental style is highlighted for the Church of Rodeiro, while the Church of Camba is noted for its role as the chapel of the lords of Casa de Camba.

The Pazo de Trasulfe has a later historical connection: it was founded in the late 16th century and has seven coats of arms on its entrance portal. Together, the Church of Rodeiro, the Church of Camba and the Pazo offer different starting points for exploring the area's architectural history, from Romanesque architecture to a portal bearing multiple coats of arms.

Archaeological finds and the museum

The Porta de Arcos archaeological site includes the remains of an important Roman villa. Materials recovered there include column bases, 2nd-century bronzes, ceramics, roof tiles and glass. Alongside the medieval churches and the later-founded Pazo, Rodeiro therefore also has an archaeological connection to the Roman period.

The Museo Municipal de Rodeiro has three permanent exhibition rooms, dedicated respectively to archaeology, painting and ethnography. It also houses a small selection of materials recovered at Porta de Arcos. Visitors interested in the finds can thus connect the archaeological site with the museum, while the other two exhibition areas focus on distinct cultural themes.

Guillar, Feira and Ruta do Faro

The Torre de Guillar is the only cultural asset in the Concello de Rodeiro listed by Patrimonio as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC). The Mirador del Alto de Guillar is a notable feature of Guillar. Both names add to the range of cultural and landscape themes, but represent different kinds of landmarks.

The Feira de Rodeiro takes place on the 28th of every month. If you want to include the market as a fixed date in your trip, check the date in advance. For hiking enthusiasts, the Ruta do Faro is included under code PR-G 7 in the network of short-distance hiking trails run by the Federación Galega de Montañismo. The market and the trail offer different ways to plan: a monthly event on the one hand and a designated route on the other.

Getting there and choosing accommodation

Rodeiro can be reached via the A-53 or N-525 to LalĂn. From there, the CRG-22 heads towards Rodeiro and Chantada. For planning purposes, LalĂn is the point where the road route continues onto the CRG-22 towards Rodeiro.

This means you can start by choosing your accommodation base according to your preferred travel focus, rather than combining all your interests into a single reason for visiting.
