The Sendeiro das Insuas leads to a viewpoint overlooking Faro de Budiño and the Louriña Valley. Porriño combines trails like these with buildings whose stories range from Romanesque church architecture to the Madrid Metro. Hiking and cycling routes vary in length and difficulty; notable endpoints and historical details provide further guidance for planning.

Hiking trails by length and character

The long-distance Sendeiro das Greas GR-58 runs for around 22 kilometres through the municipality of O Porriño and is of low to moderate difficulty. The Sendeiro dos Muíños is considerably shorter at eight kilometres, and is also of low to moderate difficulty. It passes through areas of great natural and ethnographic interest. The trails therefore share the same difficulty rating but differ considerably in length and stated character.

The Ribeira do Louro – Gándaras de Budiño route is also eight kilometres long. It is rated easy and can be completed on foot or by bicycle. The route starts and ends at the Gándaras ornithological observatory and lies within the Natura network. Compared with the Sendeiro dos Muíños, the lower difficulty rating, cycling option and designated endpoint are the key differences despite their equal length.

The Sendeiro das Insuas is a nine-kilometre circular hiking trail of moderate difficulty. Its start and finish are at the A Veiguiña picnic area. The viewpoint overlooking Faro de Budiño and the Louriña Valley adds a scenic highlight to this circular route. Compared with the eight-kilometre trails, it is slightly longer and rated as moderately difficult.

Planning the Camino and cycling route

The section of the Camino Portugués from Gándaras de Budiño to O Porriño is 5.9 kilometres long. The estimated duration is one hour and ten minutes; the difficulty is moderate to high. As trail conditions may change, check them before setting out.

There is also a circular cycling route, the Ruta Cicloturista O Porriño: it is 30.87 kilometres long, with 594 metres of elevation gain, and is of moderate difficulty. The estimated duration is three and a half hours; the route is designed especially for mountain bikes and gravel bikes. It was presented on 5 August 2026. As details may change, check the information before your ride.

Landscape and picnic area

The Área Recreativa da Risca has a picnic area and offers beautiful views of the town and the Louriña Valley. The grounds also include an interesting example of a Galician hórreo. A different landscape can be found in the complex of lagoon and riparian woodland shaped by the Louro River: it comprises a mosaic of streams, pools, seasonal ponds and permanent lagoons such as Fial, Centeáns and Budiño.

Architectural heritage and places of remembrance

The Church of San Salvador de Budiño belonged to an 11th-century monastery. It preserves an almost intact Romanesque main chapel dating from the mid-12th century. The Templete de San Luís has a very different history: it was designed for the Madrid Metro in 1919 and partially moved to O Porriño in 1971.

In Cans, the Can de Pedra is a three-metre-high stone sculpture and an attraction both during the Festival de Cans and throughout the year. Near the Church of Cans, there is also a place honouring the great figures from the world of film who have visited the village. Along with the history of San Salvador and the Templete, this place offers another cultural point of interest alongside the routes and landscapes.

Plan your stay

Compare trail length and difficulty separately: the 5.9-kilometre Camino section is rated moderate to high, while the eight-kilometre Ribeira route is rated easy. For the cycling loop, consider the elevation gain, the types of bicycles it is designed for and the estimated duration. This lets you choose activities based on specific differences, rather than using distance alone as a measure of the effort involved.
