The Museo Massó brings together themes of maritime ethnography, fish processing and navigation in Bueu. Churches dating from the 12th and 16th centuries offer other historical highlights, alongside festivals featuring music, short films and octopus. You can plan your stay around cultural visits, a signposted route or an event date.

Maritime themes at the Museo Massó

The Museo Massó is housed in the former Massó canning factory in Bueu. Its galleries focus on maritime ethnography, the fish-canning and salting industries, and navigation. Together, they offer a look at different aspects of maritime life: traditions, fish processing and travel on the water.

The museum’s location in the former factory also connects it with the history of the canning industry. If you plan your visit around a theme, you can compare this site with Bueu’s churches: here, maritime work and navigation take centre stage; there, architectural forms and their historical development.

Churches and architectural history

The Iglesia de Santa María de Cela is a Romanesque church dating from the 12th century. It was built by the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, later known as the Order of Malta. Its construction date and the history of the order provide the building with a clear historical context, which you can compare with the distinct architectural forms in Beluso.

The Iglesia de Santa María de Beluso has a 16th-century structure laid out on a Latin cross plan. Later additions bring together stylistic features ranging from Romanesque to Neoclassical. The floor plan describes a cross-shaped layout, while the wide range of styles also makes the building’s additions visible. Cela and Beluso thus offer different historical reference points: a Romanesque building from the 12th century and a church whose appearance encompasses several styles.

Near the Iglesia de San Martiño de Bueu is a Calvario dating from the second half of the 17th century. There are only three such monuments in Galicia. This additional historical landmark complements the churches with a monument from a later period.

Route to Cabo Udra

A signposted route leads from Bueu to Cabo Udra. Along the way, you can see distinctive “chozos”: structures built by shepherds, sheltered by numerous rocks. Abandoned military batteries are also among the traces along the route. The shepherds’ structures and military installations represent different uses of the area, giving the route a cultural and historical dimension as well as a connection to the landscape.

Festivals and dates

The SonRías Baixas festival takes place every year on the first weekend of August. Dates and programme may change from one edition to the next, so if you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the information for the relevant year.

The Bueu International Short Film Festival, FICBUEU, was established in 2008 as a platform for promoting the art of short film. Its associated activities include film-themed tapas routes, among other things. The parallel programme may vary from one edition to the next, so it is worth checking the details of each event if these activities are important to your travel plans.

The Festa do Polbo de Bueu was established in 1999 to promote octopus as one of the area’s most important products. At the festival, it is prepared in several ways, including as polbo á feira, in empanada, as caldeirada, on pizza and in a wok. Participating venues and specialities may vary from one edition to the next. The different preparations show the variety of ways octopus features on the festival menu.

If you are planning a stay around an event, the considerations differ: SonRías Baixas has a set annual date in August, while details of the programme or offerings at FICBUEU and the Festa do Polbo may change. If you would rather focus on architectural history or the Museo Massó, you can make these visits the main focus of your trip, regardless of a particular festival date.
