A Cañiza is a mid-mountain area with varied landscapes, where hiking and outdoor activities are a natural choice. When planning your trip, it is worth looking at the different trails: some run alongside rivers, others cross wet terrain with seasonal lagoons or lead to viewpoints in the uplands of A Paradanta. There is also a recognized center for astronomy outreach, regional culture and culinary traditions. This way, you can decide whether nature, exercise, culture or a mix of all three will be the focus of your stay.

Circular hiking routes through varied landscapes

The Sendero de las Fragas y Levadas del río Calvo y del Deva is an 18-kilometer circular hiking route through the valley of Parada de Achas. It passes through forests and mid-mountain landscapes and runs alongside the Calvo and Deva rivers. A 6.2-kilometer branch leads to Coto da Vella, where broad vistas await. Trail conditions and access to the branch may change; check both before setting out.

The Ruta da Cidade Castrexa das Grades is a 9.25-kilometer circular hiking route through the parishes of Petán, Achas and A Cañiza. Along several sections, it follows the Deva River and smaller streams. It is shorter than the 18-kilometer route; the two trails also differ in that one runs through the river valley while the other passes through the parishes.

The Ruta de Fontefría explores a different landscape. The 7.7-kilometer route starts at an elevation of 790 meters and passes several megalithic burial mounds known as mámoas. Flat, wet terrain, seasonal lagoons and several peat bogs shape this trail. This makes it a distinctive choice if, alongside river and forest landscapes, you would also like to discover the area's wetlands.

Viewpoints and uplands

The Ruta de Luneda leads to numerous natural viewpoints in the uplands of A Paradanta, an area of great scenic and cultural value in A Cañiza. Coto da Vella is also in the Sierra de A Paradanta: at an elevation of 940 meters, it offers views of A Peneda in Portugal. The Mirador de Monte Lapido offers a different perspective. From there, views extend across the Ribadil Valley and the Miño River to the mountains of northern Portugal.

The Mirador de Montouto offers another way to experience the surroundings, through the night sky. It is recognized as a Starlight Park and is used for observing the night sky and for astronomy outreach. It also hosts cultural, educational and tourism activities related to the firmament. Those interested in astronomy will find a different focus here than on the hiking trails and at the viewpoints.

Culture, pilgrimage route and local cuisine

The Casa Museo Diego de Giráldez features a monographic exhibition of works by the painter, who was born in A Cañiza. The parish church of A Cañiza was built between 1856 and 1884 and has three naves. Both sites offer a cultural counterpoint to the landscape routes. If you plan to visit the museum, check the current opening hours in advance.

A stage of the Vía Mariana also passes through specific places in the region: the seventh stage starts in El Feirón, passes the parish church of Santiago de Parada and ends at the Santuario de la Franqueira. This sequence gives the stage a clear connection to the churches and the sanctuary, without implying a particular walking time or visit duration.

The Cocido Cañicense is part of the local cuisine, a culinary tradition that brings people together to celebrate and share a meal. The Feria del Jamón takes place on August 15 in the century-old Carballeira del Cacharado. If you would like to plan your trip around this festival, check the event details in advance. In this way, the food culture complements the choice of nature experiences, viewpoints and cultural destinations.
