Baiona brings together a fortified peninsula, historic buildings and a coastal landscape with beaches, wetlands and viewpoints. When planning your trip, you can focus on different aspects: the history of the fortress and church, the sea views or the municipality’s natural areas.

Fortress, Views and Paths

The Monterreal Fortress stands on the Monte Boi peninsula, also known as Monterreal, which has been known as a fortified site for more than 2,000 years. The Torre del Reloj, Torre de la Tenaza and Torre del Príncipe remain within the fortress. The site therefore combines a long historical perspective with three specifically named towers.

From the fortress, views stretch across the estuary, the Cíes Islands and the coastline where Baiona is located. The Paseo de Monte Boi offers another perspective on the site: this path is almost two kilometres long and circles much of the base of the fortress. The views and the path are thus two distinct aspects of the fortress area—one taking in the estuary, islands and coast, the other following the base of the site.

The Virgen de la Roca also combines a structure with a viewpoint. A spiral staircase leads to the boat held by the figure. It serves as a viewpoint over the Atlantic and can accommodate five people. The staircase, figure and boat form a distinctive architectural feature of Baiona’s heritage.

Architectural History and Ancient Engravings

The Collegiate Church of Santa María dates from the 13th century and combines Romanesque elements with a Gothic structure. Its age and the combination of these two styles give you two ways to understand the building: when it was built and how it was designed.

Outeiro dos Lameiros opens up a very different span of history. The site includes more than 20 rocks bearing human-made engravings that are approximately 4,000 years old. The rock engravings and the medieval church represent different historical timeframes, without offering the same kind of heritage experience.

Beaches and Landscapes

Baiona has six beaches integrated into the town centre, with a total of 3,860 linear metres of coastline. Conditions at individual beaches can vary seasonally. Ladeira is the longest beach in the municipality. Its landscape includes regenerating dunes and the large Punta da Foz sandbar; the beach is also part of the estuary protected by the Natura 2000 network.

The Esteiro da Foz wetland provides a habitat for otters, reptiles, amphibians and more than 100 bird species. The Serra da Groba offers a different landscape and range of activities: it lies in the southern part of Baiona municipality and reaches an elevation of more than 630 metres at Alto da Gabiñeira. The wider mountain range extends across several municipalities. The Serra is suitable for hiking, sports and other leisure activities.

The Festa da Arribada

During the Festa da Arribada, Baiona’s harbour and old town become an open-air market, with stalls selling food and handmade products. The squares host traditional craft demonstrations, live medieval music, and performances by troubadours, falconers, comedians and jugglers. The Festa da Arribada is designated a Festival of International Tourist Interest. The programme may change from year to year, and the dates may shift slightly due to the calendar. If you are planning your trip around the festival, check the dates for the relevant calendar year.

When planning your timing, the beach and the festival follow different patterns: conditions at individual beaches can change seasonally, while the event dates may shift slightly from one calendar year to the next. This can help you decide whether to focus your trip primarily on heritage sites, landscapes or a visit to the Festa da Arribada.
