In Valga, medieval route history, waterscapes and local traditions come together. The destinations offer different points of interest: a panoramic view over the Ulla Valley is quite different from a walk through riverside woodland or the history of a religious route. These distinctions can help you choose the focus of your stay according to your interests.

Water, Views and Nature Trails

Lagoa da Mina Mercedes covers about 30,000 m² and is almost 20 metres deep in its central area. For a different perspective on the landscape, visit Miradoiro do Monte Beiro, which offers a panoramic view over the Ulla Valley. The lagoon is characterised by its area and depth, while the viewpoint is defined by its far-reaching views.

Parque Irmáns Dios Mosquera has a recreation area with a river beach, children’s playground, walking trail, bridges, picnic areas and parking. Here, the focus is on practical facilities by the river. By contrast, the route to Fervenzas de Raxoi e Parafita involves about 500 metres on foot through dense riverside woodland to a restored mill and a wooden walkway. These details give the nature experience different forms: a recreation area with several facilities and a clearly defined trail through the river landscape.

Monte Albor is an area connected with nature, surrounded by waterways and old mills. Valga Verde provides a municipal framework for orientation: its network includes places of natural, landscape and educational interest. This makes it possible to distinguish between views, riverside scenery and woodland trails as separate nature themes, rather than combining them into a single excursion.

Historic Routes and Their Different Meanings

The medieval Ponte do Souto in Campaña crosses the Valga River and forms part of the Camiño Real de Santiago. It also bears witness to the course of the former Camiño Real through Valga. This route ran mainly as a trade route parallel to the banks of the Ulla, in the province of Pontevedra, towards Vilagarcía. The bridge and the route are thus part of a history in which trade and the river landscape are closely connected.

The Vía Mariana has a different purpose: it is a religious route connecting Marian shrines and passes close to Capela dos Martores and the Pedra da Serpe petroglyph in Valga. The comparison reveals two different route themes: the former Camiño Real centres on trade, while the Vía Mariana connects Marian shrines. Mar de Santiago adds a maritime and river perspective. This route is formed by Vilanova de Arousa, Catoira, Valga and Pontecesures.

History, Crafts and Local Traditions

On the first floor of the Museo de la Historia de Valga, the history of Valga is presented from its first settlers to the present day. Belén Artesanal en Movemento has a different cultural focus: its figures and other decorative elements are handmade by members of the Asociación Amigos do Belén. It comprises approximately 3,000 or slightly more pieces, many of which are movable. The Belén is located at Rúa Nova s/n in Campaña, Valga (Pontevedra), 36645.

Local culinary traditions also differ in their ingredients and methods. The Festa da Anguía has been held in Valga since 1989 and showcases eel dishes made with eels from the Ulla River. The Mostra da Caña do País presents traditional spirits produced in the parishes of Valga by distilling grape pomace. One tradition thus focuses on Ulla eel, while the other centres on the processing of grape pomace.

When choosing accommodation in Valga, these different themes may help you decide: views and water, historic routes, or local history and crafts. Each of the places and traditions described offers a distinct perspective on the municipality, without setting a fixed order for your stay.
