A Illa De Arousa combines a distinctive coastal landscape with traces of maritime, industrial, and prehistoric history. Coastline of rocks, beaches, and views
The Cons, granite rocks shaped by the sea, lie in the south of A Illa De Arousa. Along the edge of the O Carreirón peninsula are numerous coves, small beaches, and rock formations. These are distinct coastal features: the Cons draw attention to the sea’s effect on granite; O Carreirón brings together several landscape forms along a peninsula. Mirador O Con do Forno offers a different view of the RĂa de Arousa. The viewpoint is at the highest point on A Illa De Arousa, 63 metres above sea level, and offers a panorama of the RĂa. This places the coastal forms at the island’s edge in contrast with a view from its highest point.
The island is also botanically notable: A Illa De Arousa is one of four island habitats on the Iberian Peninsula where the endangered coastal plant Linaria arenaria occurs. The landscape therefore includes not only rocks and beaches, but also the habitat of an endangered plant.
The Ruta dos Cons and other activities
The signposted Ruta dos Cons is seven kilometres long and follows paths made of earth, sand, and asphalt. The route is estimated to take about five and a half hours; walking time varies depending on conditions. Length and duration are therefore two separate planning details: the distance alone does not tell you how much time to allow for the walk. Along the way, the route alternates between natural areas, beaches and viewpoints, and various headlands and capes on the island. Check the signs on site.
Leisure activities on A Illa De Arousa include sports, active and water tourism, fishing, golf, hiking, tourist routes, crafts, and water sports. This offers a range of different options: alongside walking tours, the leisure activities also include water-based activities and crafts.
Maritime tradition and industrial history
The Centro de Interpretación da Conserva is located in the former Goday cannery, which is considered a restoration of Galicia’s first industrial factory, dating from the 19th century. This connects the subject of canning with a specific chapter of industrial history. The Centro provides access for people with reduced mobility and has parking facilities.
The traditional dorna is also an enduring part of A Illa De Arousa’s maritime way of life. Alongside it is the centuries-old tradition of octopus fishing, associated with pulpo á feira. The dorna and octopus fishing represent different aspects of maritime culture: the traditional boat and the long-standing connection between fishing and a particular dish.
The MuĂño das Mareas near As Aceñas is a traditional architectural structure dating from the 17th century. This brings an architectural landmark from a much earlier period into the picture alongside the industrial history of the 19th century.
Xidoiro Areoso: landscape and archaeology
The municipality also includes Xidoiro Areoso, also known as Areoso. The island lies in the centre of the RĂa de Arousa, just over one kilometre west of A Illa De Arousa. Archaeological sites with dolmens and megalithic burial mounds, built several thousand years ago, have been discovered on Xidoiro Areoso. The traces of the island’s history therefore reach far beyond the period of the industrial factory and the 17th-century structure.
The landscape on Xidoiro Areoso is also clearly divided: an active dune occupies the northern half. In the south, granite outcrops meet a vegetated dune. This contrast between dune and granite gives the island a different character from the coastal forms of O CarreirĂłn and the Cons on A Illa De Arousa.
