The Ulla and its tributaries shape Vedra’s valley landscape, which is part of the Natura 2000 network. You can explore the destination through a range of themes: walking trails, mills on the Merín, historic structures and recurring traditions. To plan your visit, choose the route that suits you or the cultural focus you are looking for.

Walking and cycling in Vedra

The Ruta del Pereiro is a linear walking trail that is five kilometres long. The stated walking time is approximately two hours and 15 minutes one way; the difficulty level is moderate. The trail starts in the parish of Vedra, beside the bridge over the Pereiro River. The walking time explicitly applies to one direction, and trail conditions may change.

Another walking route is the 12-kilometre San Xoán da Cova, which runs along the banks of the Ulla and starts at the Miradoiro de Gundián. At the Área de Interpretación dos Muíños, a walking trail of around two kilometres follows the Merín River. It is considered suitable for families; conditions may vary by season. This gives you a choice of different trail lengths and landscapes.

For cycling, the southern section of the Ruta BTT runs for 35 kilometres along the Ulla. Both sections of the Ruta BTT are described as moderately difficult and rideable year-round. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

Mills, churches and bridges

The Área de Interpretación dos Muíños comprises eight mills along the Merín, forming a very well-preserved ethnographic ensemble. Visitors can learn how mills work and compare channel mills with cup mills. The Muiño do Coxo—“Lame Man’s Mill” in English—is considered the only mill in this area with an open millrace. The trail also includes a waterfall, visible from a small viewpoint, shade-giving trees, meadows, gardens and vineyards.

The parish church of Santa Eulalia de Vedra stands on a rise above the valley. Together with the cross and spring in the forecourt, it forms an ensemble. The Santiago Chapel is in the village of Outeiro, in the parish of San Pedro de Vilanova, and was built in the 18th century.

The bridges also tell the story of Vedra’s building and transport history. The Gundián Bridge was built in the 1950s and connected Santiago to Madrid by rail. Its arch spans 50 metres. The more than 100-metre-high Ponte do Ave frames the old Gundián Bridge. At the Miradoiro de Gundián, two quartz pillars, each around 100 metres high, define the San Xoán da Cova escarpment. The 55-metre-long Ponte de Ximonde has no piers in the river thanks to its cable-stayed design, helping to protect the natural habitat.

At the Couto de Ximonde, small footbridges and fishing platforms extend into the river. A 110-metre-long weir once served as a fishing weir and was also part of the old mill operation.

Pilgrim routes through Vedra

Several pilgrimage routes pass through the municipality. The Vía da Prata reaches Vedra via Gundián. The Camiño de Inverno enters at the Virxe de Gundián and descends to Ponte Ulla. Before Santiago, this route also leads to the Fonte do Santiaguiño, where sculptures by Mestre Mateo can be seen. The Camiño Miñoto Ribeiro reaches Vedra via the Ponte de Sarandón and continues as far as the Pazo de Ximonde.

Carnival, wine and seasonal activities

Os Xenerais da Ulla is a distinctive Carnival tradition practised in Vedra and recognised as a festival of tourist interest. Its origins are traced back to armed conflicts in the 19th century, including the Peninsular War and the Carlist Wars. The recurring events are held in three parishes: in Vilanova on the Saturday before Shrove Tuesday, in Trobe on Carnival Sunday and in San Xián on the Saturday after Carnival.

Pasabodeghas is a wine route through eight wineries where traditional music is played. The Exaltación do Viño da Ulla takes place on the second Sunday in April in San Miguel de Sarandón. It offers the opportunity to taste Albariño and get to know different wineries in the Ribeira do Ulla. Check that year’s programme before travelling. Canoeing on the Ulla is offered at the Agronovo recreation area on summer weekends; check the current season’s timetable in advance.

Plan your journey

Two bus routes run by Monbús and Seoane connect the parishes of Vedra with Santiago. As bus services and operators may change, it is a good idea to check the current timetable before setting off. Whether you choose Vedra mainly for its trails, cultural heritage or seasonal events, the specific routes and dates give your stay a clear focus.
