Discover Beres from several cultural perspectives: the Iron Age Castro, a manuscript on the folk culture of Bergantiños, and Route 2 each offer a different focus. There are also historic sites in the surrounding area, along with practical directions. When planning a trip, you can distinguish between an archaeological landmark, literary tradition, a described route, and individual architectural or natural sites.

Castro de Beres: Settlement, views and tradition

The Castro de Beres is an Iron Age settlement. Its circular croa measures approximately 55 metres in diameter. From the Castro, there are views north towards the peak of Monte Neme and west towards Monte Faro de Brantuas. These two directions give the site a specific landscape setting in addition to its archaeological significance.

The Castro also has a literary connection: it was a source of poetic inspiration for Eduardo Pondal. There is also a local legend that a gleaming golden chair is buried in the Castro. The story of the golden chair is a local legend; it adds to the area’s cultural traditions but is not the same as classifying the Castro as an Iron Age settlement.

Manuscript and Route 2

The manuscript El Ciprianillo de Beres offers a different perspective. It dates from the mid-19th century and was written by Rafael Ares y Torres. The text contains extensive information about the folk culture of the Bergantiños region. This shifts the focus beyond the archaeological site to cultural traditions in the wider region.

Route 2, “Da Outrabanda a Corcoesto por Beres,” leads from the Pazo do Bosque, the municipality’s former administrative centre, to the gold mines of Corcoesto. These were already being worked in Roman times. Along the way, the route includes a visit to a stonecraft workshop and the traditional pilgrimage of Santa Mariña do Remuíño. Its highlights bring together administrative history, Roman mining history, craftsmanship and religious tradition. Santa Mariña do Remuíño is considered one of the most important ethnocultural sites in Cabana de Bergantiños.

Nearby places and directions

Near Beres is the small rural Baroque church of Capela de Santa Margarida de Baneira. A stone spring said to have healing properties lies nearby. To reach the chapel, take the road towards Baneira and Corcoesto after passing Beres and Silvarredonda. To reach Igrexa de San Pedro Silvarredonda, take the right-hand turn after the junction at Beres on the LC-423.

You can reach Fervenza do Rego de Santa Margarida via the CP-1405 from Beres towards Corcoesto; before Corcoesto, the waterfall is visible from the road at a sharp left-hand bend. Note the difference between this description of where to see it and the descent: there is no signposted path to the cascade, and the descent is difficult. Check the conditions on site before planning to go down. Road directions may change if road conditions change, so check the access route when making specific plans.

If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Beres, you can start by choosing your focus: Route 2 brings together several cultural stops, while the Castro and the manuscript offer different historical perspectives; each individual site has its own directions.
