When planning a hike in Cariño, a difference of just a few words can make a big difference: a duration may refer to the one-way trip or the round trip. Route type and difficulty level also vary considerably. When choosing a hike, consider these details together—especially when two routes have similar estimated times.
Cabo Ortegal: Geology, protected area and viewpoints
The Cabo Ortegal complex was formed around 340 million years ago during the collision of the continents Laurentia and Gondwana. Cabo Ortegal is part of the Natura 2000 network and the Special Area of Conservation for the natural features of the Costa Ártabra. Birdlife is also part of the natural experience: from the cliffs and in the skies, you can observe, among others, European storm petrels, Cory’s shearwaters, European shags and northern gannets.
The route from Miradoiro da Malveira crosses the Serra da Capelada to the Mirador de Vixía de Herbeira or Mirador da Miranda viewpoints. It is moderate to challenging and takes about three hours one way. The route also passes the Limo viewpoint at 380 metres and the Lodeiro viewpoint at 390 metres, both offering views of the Ría de Cariño-Ortigueira. The one-way duration is important when planning your day: it does not include the return trip.
Hikes by duration and route type
The Cariño–Figueiroa hike is an easy circular route around Monte Masanteo. The round trip takes about one hour and 30 minutes. The duration is different for the Cariño–San Xiao do Trebo–Cabo Ortegal route: this moderate, linear route is 4.5 kilometres long and takes about an hour and a half one way. It starts in front of Cariño town hall and ends at Cabo Ortegal. Although the estimated times are similar, they refer to different sections of the journey.
Another option is the Cabo Ortegal hiking route: it is 4.54 kilometres long, has a low difficulty level and is not a circular route. The route can be completed on foot or by bicycle. This sets it apart both from the moderate linear route to San Xiao do Trebo and on to Cabo Ortegal, and from the Cariño–Figueiroa circular route. Distance, difficulty level and whether a route is circular offer different points of reference when planning your own hike.
The Cariño–Cabo Ortegal route can be extended by a further hour from Miradoiro da Malveira. This circular route passes Monte Faroleiro and the village of Vacariza, and ends at the Punta Gabeira viewpoint. When choosing a route, you can therefore consider more than just whether it is circular or one-way: a longer option also has a specific starting point, places along the way and an endpoint.
Cultural sites and guided tours
San Xiao do Trebo links a named place with a long history: the chapel was built on an ancient Roman settlement. San Xiao do Trebo is also the focus of a centuries-old tradition, celebrated on the last Saturday in January. The Cariño–San Xiao do Trebo–Cabo Ortegal route starts in front of the town hall and ends at Cabo Ortegal, offering a way to include San Xiao in a hike.
The Zona Vella de Cariño is also of interest to culture enthusiasts: it is listed as a unique ethnographic heritage ensemble. Guided tours of the Fábrica de Conservas La Pureza offer a different kind of insight. Tours are available only by prior appointment, subject to availability and a minimum number of participants to be determined for each activity. If you plan to take a tour, confirm the date and availability before your trip.
