Betanzos combines a historic Old Town with cultural routes and landscapes along the Mandeo. Churches from different centuries, an encyclopedic park and paths through wooded areas offer a variety of experiences. Local traditions such as Tortilla de Betanzos and the Globo de San Roque add to the mix. You can shape your trip around architectural history, nature or local customs.

Old Town and architectural history

The historic Old Town of Betanzos is an open-air museum illustrating seven centuries of local history, architecture and tradition. The Igrexa de Santa MarĂa do Azogue is a Gothic church built between the second half of the 14th century and the first half of the 15th century; it is classified as an Asset of Cultural Interest (B.I.C.). The Gothic Iglesia y Convento de San Francisco also dates from the second half of the 14th century. It is also a B.I.C. and preserves sarcophagi belonging to various members of the Andrade family.

The Iglesia de Santiago dates from the 15th century: Fernán Pérez de Andrade “O Mozo” had it built over an older Romanesque church. The Porta da Vila, also known as Puerta Real, bears the coats of arms of Galicia, Castile, León and the city of Betanzos. The coat of arms of Galicia is considered the oldest surviving depiction of this emblem in the region. Another aspect of the city’s history can be discovered at the Museo das Mariñas, housed in the former 17th- and 18th-century Santo Domingo Monastery and home to more than 5,000 objects.

Park, museum and cultural routes

The Parque del Pasatiempo is an extraordinary encyclopedic park from the late 19th century and is one of Galicia’s most distinctive cultural creations. A walk takes you across several levels and through grottoes and passageways, as well as a symbolic and visual landscape. Check current access arrangements before your trip.

Printmaking is also part of the cultural offering: the CIEC (Centro Internacional de la Estampa Contemporánea) is both a workshop and a museum, housed in a modernist building designed by Rafael González Villar for the Núñez family. Its collection includes more than 3,000 works by established and emerging printmakers. The Fundación CIEC offers visitor activities where you can watch and learn how graphic works are created, try the process yourself and make prints. Check in advance what visitor options are currently available.

Several cultural routes explore different aspects of the city. The Ruta del Modernismo is a walking tour of notable examples of modernist and eclectic architecture. The Ruta de los Oficios focuses on traditional occupations and former craft and commercial sites. The Rutas de los hermanos GarcĂa Naveira introduce the social, educational and architectural legacy of Juan and JesĂşs GarcĂa Naveira.

By the Mandeo: nature and trails

Betanzos is part of the Mariñas Coruñesas e Terras do Mandeo Biosphere Reserve. Parts of the municipality are also included in the Natura 2000 network as bird protection areas and Sites of Community Importance. At the Ría de Betanzos, extensive coastal marshes lie near the mouth of the Mendo and Mandeo; alongside the urban area, there is also a small port and boats.

Two routes along the Mandeo offer different experiences: the Ruta Os Caneiros follows the river to Campo dos Caneiros, passing through wooded, natural areas. The Ruta Os Muíños de Pelamios also takes in the former Batán de Pelamios and the remains of mills, canals and waterways. Check trail conditions locally.

Camino Inglés, festivals and local cuisine

The historic Camino Inglés runs from Ferrol to Betanzos, connecting the coast and inland areas, natural landscapes and medieval towns. On the Pontedeume–Betanzos stage, pilgrims enter the city after crossing the Mandeo via A Ponte Vella. The Oficina de Turismo de Betanzos provides pilgrims with information about the Camino route, the city’s cultural heritage, available services and the next stages. It also stamps pilgrim credentials and offers personal guidance; check opening arrangements in advance.

The handmade Globo de San Roque, made of paper, rises each year as the highlight of the San Roque celebrations. The Jira dos Caneiros is a popular, community-based pilgrimage tradition associated with the Mandeo. During the Feria Franca Medieval, the Old Town comes alive with medieval crafts, markets and the atmosphere of bygone times; dates vary from year to year. Tortilla de Betanzos is part of the local culinary tradition. You can also sample the light, fruity local wine in traditional establishments identified by a laurel branch on the door. Specific venues may change.
