Ovejuela combines hiking trails of varying lengths with historic buildings and an insight into honey culture. When choosing a route, it is helpful to know both the round-trip distance and the approximate walking time in each direction. The town also offers specific points of interest for anyone who wants to plan their stay around more than just outdoor activities.

Hikes by distance and interest

The Chorritero de Ovejuela route starts in Ovejuela’s main square, follows the river upstream and crosses four wooden bridges. Its 3.8 kilometers include the outbound and return journeys. This makes it considerably shorter than the routes to Chorro de los Ángeles and Puente de los Machos. There is also a natural swimming pool on the way to Chorritero. Check the seasonal conditions at the pool locally before visiting.

For longer hikes, you can compare Chorro and Puente by their total distances. The Chorro de los Ángeles route covers 18 kilometers for the round trip and is suitable for hiking, mountain biking and running. From the viewpoint along this route, griffon vultures can often be seen above the waterfall and river valley; sightings are seasonal and not guaranteed on every visit. The route to Puente de los Machos is also listed as a round trip and covers 15 kilometers. It is suitable for the same three activities.

The hiking route to Chorrituelo de Ovejuela starts in Ovejuela; walking time is approximately 40 minutes each way. As this is an estimate and seasonal trail conditions can affect the journey, allow some extra time when planning. This works out to roughly 80 minutes of walking time for the round trip; breaks and seasonal trail conditions will add to this.

Trails and getting there

The GR 10 Tramo Las Hurdes also runs between Casar de Palomero and Ovejuela. Trail conditions and waymarking can change; check both before setting out. Ovejuela can be reached via the EX-204 and then the CC-155; the CC-155 ends in the settlement.

Architecture and honey

Puente de los Machos, the destination of a dedicated route, dates from the 13th century, is built of dry stone and has a pointed arch. The Church of Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles in Ovejuela is an important cultural heritage monument in the municipality. Ovejuela’s history is also connected with the 13th-century Franciscan convent of Los Ángeles. Its ruins lie in the valley of the Los Ángeles River, are privately owned and are not open to visitors. Check the access arrangements locally before approaching the site. The region’s traditional architecture is particularly prominent in Ovejuela.

The Centro de Interpretación de la Miel de Ovejuela is housed in a former olive oil mill. Visitors can take part in a small tasting of different types of honey there. Check access arrangements before your visit so you can include the tasting in your plans.
