In Logrosán, archaeological remains, Gothic architecture and mining history meet trails through the landscape. The Sierra de San Cristóbal is home to the only known Tartessian tin workings in Western Europe. Other highlights include Mina Costanaza and Cerro de San Cristóbal—two further subjects that draw attention to the history and landscape of the area.

Archaeology and Gothic Art

The archaeological remains at San Cristóbal include evidence dating from the Chalcolithic period. Mina Costanaza offers a different perspective on mining history: it was worked intermittently from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century. Thus, archaeological traces and the history of a mine sit side by side in Logrosán, though they do not refer to the same period.

The Iglesia de San Mateo de Logrosán is another highlight. It is considered one of the finest examples of religious Gothic architecture in the UNESCO Global Geopark Villuercas-Ibores-Jara. The church also houses a wooden sculpture dating from the 13th century: Nuestra Señora del Carrascal depicts a seated Madonna holding the Child in her arms, in the Proto-Gothic style. The architecture, material, date and depiction each offer a different perspective on art history.

Discover Mina Costanaza

A guided tour of the mine tunnels is offered at the Centro de Interpretación de la Mina Costanaza. Inside the mine, visitors can see a mineralised phosphorite vein, geodes and stalactites. A short ride on a mine train is also available. If you plan to visit, check the booking conditions and ride availability before travelling.

The mine thus brings together several specific aspects: its intermittent operation from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century, a look inside the tunnels and the geological formations visible there. The tour and possible mine-train ride are visitor experiences; they should not be confused with the mine's former use.

Cerro de San Cristóbal and Trails

Cerro de San Cristóbal is an isolated mountain southwest of the centre of Logrosán. Its maximum elevation is 680 metres; its granite dome rises about 200 metres above the surrounding peneplain. The two elevation figures describe different things: one gives the mountain's maximum elevation, while the other gives its relative height above the surrounding landscape.

The Ruta Roso de Luna runs from the Ermita de la Virgen del Consuelo along a broad path up the southern side of the Sierra de San Cristóbal to the mountain and the night-sky observation area. This identifies both the starting point and the destination of the route. Visitors interested in Cerro de San Cristóbal can use this route as a guide for their outing.

The Vía Verde de Las Vegas del Guadiana y las Villuercas offers a different kind of route. It follows a former railway line, is 56.20 kilometres long and is linear. Logrosán is among the municipalities listed along the route. It can be used on foot, by bicycle or on horseback. When choosing between the routes, different details are therefore relevant: the Ruta Roso de Luna focuses on the way to Cerro de San Cristóbal and its starting point, while the Vía Verde is defined by its total length, linear layout and the listed ways of travelling.

Fossils and Minerals

The Museo Geológico-Minero “Vicente Sos Baynat” displays fossils and minerals from around the world. The museum complements the themes of mining and landscape with a collection of worldwide origin. Along with the tunnels at Mina Costanaza, it offers another way to explore geological topics, though the two places do not show the same things: the mine focuses on the formations visible inside it, while the museum displays fossils and minerals from different parts of the world.
