Guijo De Santa Bárbara’s steep, rugged mountain terrain opens up views of the Garganta de Jaranda. Hiking trails, natural swimming pools and local traditions offer different ways to plan your stay.

Hiking trails between the gorge and mountain refuge

The Ruta del Trabuquete is 12 kilometers long and rated as a hike of moderate to high difficulty. It connects Guijo De Santa Bárbara with the Portillo de Jaranda, following the course of the Garganta Jaranda. Plan for a long, challenging hike; trail conditions may change.

The Ruta del Refugio de las Nieves leads to the Refugio de la Virgen de las Nieves, described as Extremadura’s highest-altitude religious building. The route also connects with the Camino de Castilla, an old route used for seasonal livestock migration and food trade with the neighboring province of Ávila. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

Summer swimming spots

In summer, the pools along the Garganta Jaranda become natural swimming pools. The Charco del Trabuquete can be reached from Guijo via a path of about three kilometers along the Garganta de Jaranda. From the upper part of town, it takes about 20 minutes to walk to the Charco Calajomero; the elevation gain is slight. The Charco de la Máquina is a natural swimming pool on the Garganta Jaranda near Guijo De Santa Bárbara, a few meters from the road between Guijo and Jarandilla de la Vera. Water levels and swimming safety conditions, as well as trail and road conditions, may vary; check the current situation before your outing.

Buildings and local history

The Iglesia Parroquial Nuestra Señora del Socorro was built in the 18th century. It houses a carved statue of Santa Bárbara, a Mudéjar-style ceiling and embroidered mantles honoring Santa Bárbara. The Centro de Interpretación de la Reserva Regional de Caza „La Sierra“ is a public cultural building owned and managed by the Junta de Extremadura. Its exhibits cover the geography, vegetation and wildlife of the protected area, with a focus on the Spanish ibex.

The town’s traditional architecture includes typical houses in Barrio Viriato, on Calle de la Iglesia and at Plaza de D. Antonio. The Lavadero público is a preserved traditional washhouse that once served as a meeting place for the women of Guijo. The Ermita de Ntra. Sra. de las Nieves was built at Collado Alto in the 1960s. It has rooms with a kitchen that serve as accommodation for mountaineers and shepherds. If you plan to stay overnight at the Ermita, confirm current availability in advance.

Annual festivals

The Fiestas Virgen de las Nieves on August 5 include a pilgrimage from Guijo to the mountain refuge of the same name and the traditional descent to the Charco del Trabuquete. The local Plaza de toros is a stone enclosure for the traditional Vaquillas held during the Fiestas de Agosto on August 14 and 15. The Fiestas Patronales de Santa Bárbara feature dancers, a procession on December 4, Buñuelos and „Flores“ with chocolate, as well as music, liqueurs and dancing. Los Campanillos takes place on December 7 with a bell procession through Guijo and attracts locals and tourists each year. The specific program for a future edition of these recurring festivals may vary.
