Wide-ranging views over the Jerte Valley and the Sierra de Tormantos define the Mirador de la Memoria, which is also a place of remembrance. El Torno also offers traditional stone huts, two hiking trails described in different ways, and a natural swimming spot. Landscape, remembrance and outdoor activity therefore offer different themes to consider when planning a trip.

Remembrance and Cultural Heritage

The sculptures at the Mirador de la Memoria commemorate those forgotten after the Spanish Civil War. They were created by Francisco Cedenilla and installed in 2008. Memorial events are held at the viewpoint for the victims and for people persecuted under Francoism and during the Spanish Civil War. One of these commemorations takes place on the first Sunday in October. It remembers the guerrilla fighters who defended the mountains of the Jerte Valley. Specific event dates may vary from year to year, so if you want to travel for a particular occasion, check the annual schedule in advance.

Another cultural destination is the Iglesia Ntra. SÂŞ Virgen de la Piedad, built in the mid-16th century. The church houses a Hispano-Flemish carving of the Virgin of Mercy from the 15th century. The carving therefore dates from an earlier century than the church building. The church and its carving offer two distinct points in time for exploring local cultural heritage.

There are around a hundred stone huts in the area around El Torno, some several centuries old. They once provided shelter for shepherds, goatherds and farmers; today they are considered a picturesque local attraction. The number is approximate. Together with the church and the Mirador, the huts illustrate different aspects of local cultural heritage: religious art, remembrance and traditional structures in the landscape.

Hiking Trails and Landscape

The linear PR-CC 7 hiking trail starts at Fuente el Regajo in El Torno and ends at Canchal del Maqui. It passes through cherry orchards and pastureland, as well as traditional dry-stone structures, including chozos, majadas and enclosures. The trail is rated as moderately difficult and has an estimated duration of five hours and 15 minutes. It is 8.3 kilometres each way, or 16.6 kilometres in total.

The PR-CC 8 Garganta La Puria – Arroyo Labradillo, by contrast, is a 12.55-kilometre circular trail. It follows the Arroyo Labradillo, passes a viewpoint and goes by oak groves and meadows on the way towards El Torno. Check trail conditions before setting out.

When choosing a trail, it helps to compare more than just the distances in kilometres: for PR-CC 7, the one-way distance and total length are given separately, while for PR-CC 8, the length of the circular route is given. PR-CC 7 also has an estimated duration and difficulty rating. The two trails therefore differ in route type and provide different information for planning how much time to allow.

A Natural Swimming Spot

Piscina Natural Los Pozos is located in the Hoya de las Canales gorge, also known as Garganta del Lugar. From El Torno, it can be reached by road in the direction of Cabezabellosa. From the car park, a path of about 100 metres leads to the natural swimming spot. This adds a swimming destination to the hiking and cultural heritage options, without requiring a particular route to connect it with the other attractions.

The facts offer different points of reference when choosing a theme for your trip: the two hiking trails can be compared by route type and distance; for PR-CC 7, duration and difficulty are also useful. The Mirador, church and stone huts are associated with remembrance and cultural heritage, while Los Pozos offers a different focus. You can plan your stay around whichever of these aspects of the area matters most to you.
