Several milestones are located in Parque de los Miliarios. They were brought to Carcaboso from the Vía de la Plata. In Roman times, stones like these marked the miles along the road. The park is classified as an archaeological site on the Roman road and is located in the municipality of Carcaboso, in the province of Cáceres. The function of the stones is thus closely tied to the town’s historical theme.
Roman Road and Santiago Apóstol
Parque de los Miliarios is next to the Parish Church of Santiago Apóstol. The Church of Santiago Apóstol dates from the 16th century and preserves several milestones in its entrance portico. Two milestone columns from the reigns of Emperors Trajan (98–117) and Hadrian (117–138) also stand next to the church. The park and church therefore offer different points of reference for the milestones: the archaeological site and the church portico area.
Roman Road and the Camino de Santiago
The Los Miliarios Interpretation Centre focuses on both the Roman road and the Camino de Santiago along the Vía de la Plata. It provides all the information needed to undertake the pilgrimage route. The centre therefore takes in not only the history of the road but also the practical perspective of the pilgrimage. If you are planning a visit, check current visiting arrangements before travelling.
A small ethnographic exhibition featuring objects lent by Carcaboso residents adds a local perspective to the route. Alongside the long-distance routes, the exhibition also highlights items on loan from the town. The regional stage breakdown is also useful for finding your way along the Camino de Santiago: the Extremadura section of the Camino de Santiago Vía de la Plata is divided into five stages for cyclists.
The Cruz de Mayo and Local Traditions
The Cruz de Mayo festival is celebrated every year on the first Sunday in May. The date provides a fixed point for planning a trip; the exact programme may vary. If you are travelling specifically for the celebration, check the latest event information in advance.
A branch decorated with roscas takes centre stage in the procession. The offerings are auctioned after Mass. The Cruz de Mayo gathering takes place at a picnic area on the right bank of the Jerte, where the river flows through Carcaboso. The procession, auction and riverbank each provide a distinct, specific setting for the celebration.
Another local tradition is Tirar la Malla: young women throw a flower-decorated jug into the river, which the newlyweds then have to break with stones. The description makes the custom vivid by identifying its participants and the jug as its central object.
Getting There and Regional Route Planning
The main route to Carcaboso is via the A-66 motorway. Around Plasencia, leave the motorway and take the EX-204 towards Carcaboso. The turn-off is roughly level with Plasencia; check your route before setting out, as road conditions and signage may change.
For cyclists, the division of the Camino de Santiago Vía de la Plata in Extremadura provides another layer of planning: the section there is split into five stages. This regional stage information complements the Camino details provided by the Interpretation Centre, while keeping the two different scales distinct.
