Vilademuls combines gently rolling terrain with medieval villages and traces of rural life. Hills and rises alternate with broad valleys and small plains across the municipality. When choosing where to stay, it helps to decide first whether historic architecture, rural culture or routes through the villages matter most to you. This lets you plan your stay around your interests without reducing Vilademuls to a single type of destination.
Landscape and routes
Several routes pass through the medieval villages that make up Vilademuls and along paths lined with pines and holm oaks. The terrain adds a different dimension: alongside hills and rises, broad valleys and small plains shape the landscape. If you want to focus more on the landscape, you can follow the routes; if you are interested in architectural history, the gate, castle and church offer a distinct focus. These are two different ways to explore the municipality: paths through villages and wooded stretches on the one hand, and architectural features with specific historical connections on the other.
Medieval and ecclesiastical traces
The village of Vilademuls was surrounded by a wall. What remains includes a monumental gate with a 13th-century round arch built from wedge-shaped stones, as well as part of the base of the wall. Vilademuls Castle was built in the 11th century. As a territorial castle, it held jurisdiction over all the villages in the Barony of Vilademuls. The gate and castle thus point to different aspects of local history: the former fortifications and the castle’s role as a seat of authority within the barony.
The church of Sant Joan Baptista also combines architectural details with dated records. Its façade has a Gothic entrance portal with an inscription recording the rebuilding of the temple in 1560. The church also houses the ossuary of Saurina de CervellĂł. It features the coats of arms of Vilademuls and RocabertĂ, along with an inscription dated 1307. The portal, ossuary and inscriptions offer a different perspective on history from the remains of the wall and the castle: here, ecclesiastical architecture and specific commemorative markers take centre stage.
Rural life and distinctive architectural forms
The Museu Rural de Vilademuls shifts the focus from buildings to rural daily life. It contains more than 500 objects that were once used in rural life. The museum also recreates an old farmhouse and uses its objects to convey rural history and the history of earlier generations. In this way, everyday history complements the architectural heritage: rather than a single gate, church or castle, the focus here is on practical objects and the lives of earlier generations.
Another architectural feature is the preserved oratory in a field near Can Guapanoia. It dates from the 18th century, consists of two large sections and is topped with a cross. Its design differs from the enclosed structures of the church and castle; the oratory thus provides a distinctive feature among Vilademuls’s historic buildings.
Customs and community traditions
A traditional festival in Vilademuls includes a communal Arrossada popular. Residents and relatives take part, and the traditional rice meal gives the local festival culture a communal character. It complements the architecture and the Museu Rural’s collection with a social tradition centred on gathering for the festival.
A ceremony with a procession is also held annually in Vilademuls. Visitors come to the church and take part in the procession; the date follows the Corpus calendar. If you want to plan your trip around this tradition, check the date in advance. This gives you several different focuses to choose from when planning: landscape and routes, medieval and ecclesiastical buildings, rural history or local customs.
