Orfes combines a long-documented church history with a shady river landscape and walking paths. Santa Maria d’Orfes and its parish have been documented since 1146; at the Resclosa d’Orfes, the river, surrounding fields and a weir with its own water-management function come together. The historical trail leads to the church, chapel and cross, while the paths lead to the landscape and the history of water engineering.

Churches, Chapel and Cross

Santa Maria d’Orfes and its parish have been documented since 1146. The neoclassical church was built between 1762 and 1771. These dates mark different stages: 1146 refers to Santa Maria and the parish, while the later years refer to the church’s construction period. Those interested in the history of religious architecture can thus distinguish the early ecclesiastical connection from the specific building phase.

The Capella de Sant Roc d’Orfes offers a different historical perspective. It stands on a small hill above the village. Its construction is associated with the plague, which particularly devastated this area in the 17th century. The chapel is in ruins; its walls and vaulted arches remain. Its location, historical context and surviving architectural features provide concrete clues for understanding the site. The Creu de Can Gay d’Orfes adds to the religious landmarks: it was formerly used to bless the municipal area. Here, the focus is on a former communal use.

River Landscape and Water Engineering

The Resclosa d’Orfes adds a landscape and engineering focus to the historical sites. It lies in a shady river landscape, is surrounded by fields and is easily reached on foot from Orfes. Its purpose was to impound water and divert part of the Fluvià into a canal. The river setting and the weir’s function can therefore be considered together: the Resclosa is both a place in the landscape and a structure for directing water.

Paths Around Orfes

There are two different walking routes to consider. The Ruta per les ribes del Fluvià starts at Plaça major d’Orfes, goes via Carretera d’Orfes and La Resclosa, and returns to Plaça major. A signposted path connects Orfes with Canelles. The routes therefore offer different directions: the Ruta returns to its starting square, while the other path connects two places. If you prefer a route that returns to the same square, the Ruta provides named landmarks along the way. For the connection to Canelles, the signposted path is the relevant option. Local conditions on the Ruta may change; check them before setting out. It is also advisable to check the current trail markings for the route to Canelles.

The choice of route therefore depends on which option suits you: a route via Carretera d’Orfes and La Resclosa that returns to Plaça major, or the connection from Orfes to Canelles.
